He notes an unusually late appearance of the worm in the Southwest, where it did not show itself in any force till the middle of August, and then only within narrow limits. Some observers in South Texas put the loss occasioned by the insect at a third of the crop, but experience has taught a distrust in local estimates of this charac ter, which are Often unduly influenced by panic. A still greater loss is stated in some districts of Alabama, leading to extravagant local estimates of general loss.
