Report of the Michigan House Committee on State Affairs "to whom was referred the memorial of Charles A. Trowbridge, Esq., and other citizens of the State of Michigan, largely engaged in the manufacture of iron, in the county of Marquette, in the Upper Peninsula of the State asking for a reduction of the specific tax imposed on corporations engaged in iron mining." (Page 1). The report indicates that an act passed in 1853 imposes specific taxes on corporations formed for mining, smelting, or manufacturing iron and other minerals. The committee finds that the tax is unjust and proposes a bill to reduce the tax. The report includes a list showing a test of the tenacity of guns made from iron from eight locations, including Jackson Mountain, Lake Superior (which had the highest strength in pounds per square inch), a list of the amount of iron manufactured in England from 1750-1854, and a list showing the amount of iron produced in the United States from 1810-1855. The report is signed by E.H. Thomson, Committee on State Affairs.
