Excerpt from Science-Teaching in the Schools: An Address Delivered Before the American Naturalists At the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Naturalists, held in New Haven, in December, 1887, one entire day was devoted to the discussion of Science-Teaching in the Schools. The papér now presented to the public is one of the addresses given to the Society at that time. It has, however, undergone some revision and enlargement since its delivery. It has already appeared in the American Naturalist for September and October, 1888, and is now reprinted with the permission of the publishers of that journal. I take this opportunity to express thanks for their courtesy. Two other papers relating to the same subject appear as Appendices in the present publication. At the New Haven meeting of the Society of Naturalists, a Committee was appointed "to develop a scheme of instruction in Natural Science to be recommended to the schools." At the meeting held in Baltimore, in December, 1888, that Committee presented a report which was unanimously adopted. That report, here presented as Appendix I., will show' that the opinions expressed in the address are, as regards their main outlines, the opinions of the great body of working naturalists and advanced teachers of science.
