Global Differential Geometry

Release | : 2001 |
Genre | : Mathematics |
ISBN | : 0821827502 |
Alfred Gray's work covered a great part of differential geometry. In September 2000, a remarkable International Congress on Differential Geometry was held in his memory in Bilbao, Spain. Mathematicians from all over the world, representing 24 countries, attended the event. This volume includes major contributions by well known mathematicians (T. Banchoff, S. Donaldson, H. Ferguson, M. Gromov, N. Hitchin, A. Huckleberry, O. Kowalski, V. Miquel, E. Musso, A. Ros, S. Salamon, L. Vanhecke, P. Wellin and J.A. Wolf), the interesting discussion from the round table moderated by J.-P. Bourguignon, and a carefully selected and refereed selection of the Short Communications presented at the Congress. This book represents the state of the art in modern differential geometry, with some general expositions of some of the more active areas: special Riemannian manifolds, Lie groups and homogeneous spaces, complex structures, symplectic manifolds, geometry of geodesic spheres and tubes and related problems, geometry of surfaces, and computer graphics in differential geometry.

Writing Small Omegas: Elie Cartan's Contributions to the Theory of Continuous Groups 1894-1926 provides a general account of Lie's theory of finite continuous groups, critically examining Cartan's doctoral attempts to rigorously classify simple Lie algebras, including the use of many unpublished letters. It evaluates pioneering attempts to generalize Lie's classical ideas to the infinite-dimensional case in the works of Lie, Engel, Medolaghi and Vessiot. Within this context, Cartan's groundbreaking contributions in continuous group theory, particularly in his characteristic and unique recourse to exterior differential calculus, are introduced and discussed at length. The work concludes by discussing Cartan's contributions to the structural theory of infinite continuous groups, his method of moving frames, and the genesis of his geometrical theory of Lie groups. - Discusses the origins of the theory of moving frames and the geometrical theory of Lie groups - Reviews Cartan's revolutionary contributions to Lie group theory and differential geometry - Evaluates many unpublished sources that shed light on important aspects of the historical development of Lie algebras
Variational and Quasi-Variational Inequalities in Mechanics

The essential aim of this book is to consider a wide set of problems arising in the mathematical modeling of mechanical systems under unilateral constraints. In these investigations elastic and non-elastic deformations, friction and adhesion phenomena are taken into account. All the necessary mathematical tools are given: local boundary value problem formulations, construction of variational equations and inequalities and their transition to minimization problems, existence and uniqueness theorems, and variational transformations (Friedrichs and Young-Fenchel-Moreau) to dual and saddle-point search problems.

The Collected Papers of Raoul Bott are contained in five volumes, with each volume covering a different subject and each representing approximately a decade of Bott's work. The volumes are: Volume 1: Topology and Lie Groups (1950's) Volume 2: Differential Operators (1960's) Volume 3: Foliations (1970's) Volume 4: Mathematics Related to Physics (1980's) Volume 5: Completive Articles and Additional Biographic Material (1990's) Most of the papers in this volume deal with two physical-inspired themes: the Yang-Mills equations and the rigidity phenomena of vector bundles. It also contains Bott's own commentaries on a few of the papers, as well as a tribute by Clifford Taubes.
Mathematicians in Bologna 1861–1960

The scientific personalities of Luigi Cremona, Eugenio Beltrami, Salvatore Pincherle, Federigo Enriques, Beppo Levi, Giuseppe Vitali, Beniamino Segre and of several other mathematicians who worked in Bologna in the century 1861–1960 are examined by different authors, in some cases providing different view points. Most contributions in the volume are historical; they are reproductions of original documents or studies on an original work and its impact on later research. The achievements of other mathematicians are investigated for their present-day importance.

This book addresses the emerging body of literature on the study of rare events in random graphs and networks. For example, what does a random graph look like if by chance it has far more triangles than expected? Until recently, probability theory offered no tools to help answer such questions. Important advances have been made in the last few years, employing tools from the newly developed theory of graph limits. This work represents the first book-length treatment of this area, while also exploring the related area of exponential random graphs. All required results from analysis, combinatorics, graph theory and classical large deviations theory are developed from scratch, making the text self-contained and doing away with the need to look up external references. Further, the book is written in a format and style that are accessible for beginning graduate students in mathematics and statistics.
