Seventy-five years after America fell in love with the cinematic classic Gone with the Wind, LIFE revisits the making of the award-winning movie and gives readers a rare look into the film's captivating, behind-the-scenes drama. This richly illustrated book is a must-have collector's item for old fans and new. At age 75, Gone with the Wind endures magnificently and is often considered one of the best films of all time. The travails of getting the movie made in the 1930s were chronicled in the pages of LIFE (1,400 actresses interviewed before Vivien Leigh chosen; Selznick waited two years for Clark Gable to sign on to the project), as was the frenzy of its premiere. All of this coverage is revisited in this lavish coffee-table edition, which also includes behind-the-scenes photography from the set, stunning pictures of the famed burning of Atlanta scene, as well as all of the fascinating, intimate photography from the making of the movie. Furthermore, LIFE partnered with renowned southern authors to bring readers insight into the influence of the book and film on American culture and presents a side-by-side chronicle of what Gone with the Wind claims, and what really happened during the Civil War. This book is as informative and intriguing as it is beautifully illustrated.

Excerpt from Reminiscences of Seventy-Five Years I was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, on January 4, 1826; consequently I have nearly completed my eighty-seventh year. Beverly was a town of considerable importance in the Common wealth. It was, as a part of Salem, one of the earliest of the Colonial settlements, many of its citizens had been engaged in foreign commerce sailing from Salem and Boston as well as from Beverly, and some had taken important parts in the polit ical life of State and nation. The leading citizen of that time, and probably for all time, was Nathan Dane, the author of the Ordinance of 1787 for the government of the Northwestern territory, by which slavery was forever excluded from what now constitutes the States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. Seldom is it given to man to become the instrument in legislation of such transcendent importance as this which consecrated that vast region forever to Human Freedom. To Dr. Dane also is due the provision in the Constitution prohibiting any State from passing laws impairing the obliga tion of contracts. I remember him very well, an old gentleman with a serene and kindly face. I used to carry to him the N orth American Review and other periodicals for which he and my grandfather, Robert Rantoul, with Dr. Joshua Fisher, were joint subscribers. When I remember my little conversations with one who had been a distinguished member of the Continental Congress it does seem to me a far cry indeed. A brilliant, life-affirming, and hilarious memoir from a “genius” (The New York Times) and master storyteller. With illustrations by Jason Polan. The seven years between the birth of Etgar Keret’s son and the death of his father were good years, though still full of reasons to worry. Lev is born in the midst of a terrorist attack. Etgar’s father gets cancer. The threat of constant war looms over their home and permeates daily life. What emerges from this dark reality is a series of sublimely absurd ruminations on everything from Etgar’s three-year-old son’s impending military service to the terrorist mind-set behind Angry Birds. There’s Lev’s insistence that he is a cat, releasing him from any human responsibilities or rules. Etgar’s siblings, all very different people who have chosen radically divergent paths in life, come together after his father’s shivah to experience the grief and love that tie a family together forever. This wise, witty memoir—Etgar’s first nonfiction book published in America, and told in his inimitable style—is full of wonder and life and love, poignant insights, and irrepressible humor.
