Electric power systems are experiencing dramatic changes in operational requirements as a result of deregulation. Continuing electric load growth and higher regional power transfers in a largely interconnected network lead to complex and less secure power system operation. Power generation and transmission facilities have not been able to grow to meet these new demands as a result of economic, environmental, technical, and governmental regulation constraints. At the same time, the growth of electronic loads has made the quality of power supply a critical issue. Power system engineers facing these challenges seek solutions to allow them to operate the system in a more flexible, controllable manner. When power system disturbances occur, synchronous generators are not always able to respond rapidly enough to keep the system stable. If high-speed real or reactive power control is available, load shedding or generator dropping may be avoided during the disturbance. High speed reactive power control is possible through the use of flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) devices. In a few cases, these devices are also able to provide some measure of high speed real power control through power circulation within the converter, with the real power coming from the same line or in some cases from adjacent lines leaving the same substation. However, a better solution would be to have the ability to rapidly vary real power without impacting the system through power circulation.

The book describes methods of modeling, planning and implementing electric energy storage systems. Energy storage becomes an important issue when more and more electric power is generated by wind mills and photovoltaics systems, because green energy is more volatile. So energy storage is necessary to guarantee safe and secure electric energy supply.Market and power system oriented operations of electric energy storage require different planning methods and different algorithms for searching the optimal solution. These methods are described in detail for energy storage implementations in generation, transmission and distribution levels. Economic aspects are considered. For many years, the authors have been developing smart grid solutions as well as a methology of modeling and planning electric energy storage usage. The aim has been to increase the flexibility of the power system heading for an energy system which is completely generated by green energy.

ENERGY STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES IN GRID MODERNIZATION Written and edited by a team of experts, this exciting new volume discusses the various types of energy storage technologies, the applications of energy storage systems, their role in the real-time operation of power markets, and the operational issues of modern power systems, including renewable-based generating sources. The worldwide energy sector, specifically power generation, has undergone a huge transformation in recent years, and the focus is to make it sustainable, environmentally friendly, reliable, and highly efficient. As a result, a significant share of highly intermittent but clean renewable sources is being integrated into the power system using advanced technological components. The higher penetration level of renewable energy sources (RESs) has increased the active power generation share in the grid but reduced the total rotating system inertia. This high reduction in inertia brings new challenges and technical issues to the operators of modern power systems and impacts the stability and security of the grid. The stochasticity of these renewable sources also poses a big challenge to the efficient operation of the power system. Electrical energy storage systems help to manage such issues and challenges that occur due to the intermittent nature of RES and can play a big role in the smooth and reliable operation of the power system. The applications and opportunities to use storage on the grid are growing due to the improvements in energy storage technologies, and flexible regulatory frameworks. Technological developments have made it possible to use batteries and other Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) for managing the operation of the power system. This book aims to illustrate the potential of energy storage systems in different applications of the modern power system considering recent advances and research trends in storage technologies. These areas are going to play a very significant role in future smart grid operations. This book discusses the various types of energy storage technologies and promotes the applications of ESSs in the performance improvement of modern power systems. Whether for the veteran engineer, new hire, or student, it is a must-have for any library.
