LONG-TERM MANAGEMENT OF USED NUCLEAR FUEL i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY On December 6, 2004 the Public Policy Forum held a roundtable with senior opinion leaders from the private and non-profit sectors who were asked to comment on potential elements of an implementation plan that would ensure that Canadians would be confident in the long-term solutions undertaken to manage nuclear fuel waste. [...] The federal government passed the Nuclear Fuel Waste Act which led to the creation of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) in 2002. [...] The challenge for NWMO is to ensure that the recommendations proposed are "socially acceptable, technically sound, environmentally responsible, and economically feasible."4 While NWMO is not to recommend a site for implementation, it is to specify economic regions where it might be appropriate to implement the different approaches.
