The applicability of the seismic refraction method for engineering purposes was investigated in the Thule area of Greenland. Special attention was given to the cases in which shallow ice overlies frozen ground and in which frozen glacial drift up to a few hundred feet thick overlies bedrock. Seismic velocities were measured in different types of sediments of the Thule formation and in the crystalline basement rock. The velocities in rock and frozen ground were generally high, cementation by ice being the most likely reason at the relatively low ground temperatures of about -10 C. It was found that, with comparable velocity discrimination, the refraction method gives more complete information in permafrost than in unfrozen material, since later seismic events can be identified on the records shortly after the first arrival. Later events also made wide angle reflection soundings possible at a depth as shallow as 200 ft. A nagative velocity gradient in the frozen ground is believed to be responsible for the rapid attenuation of tthe direct wave. (Author).

Marcha Fox, author of the Star Trails Tetralogy, (Beyond the Hidden Sky; A Dark of Endless Days; A Psilent Place Below; and Refractions of Frozen Time) is a physicist with over two-decades experience working at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. She has skillfully integrated real as well as speculative science into this hard science fiction series to stimulate interest in STEM topics. Sociological and interpersonal situations are also presented in an entertaining way to which readers can relate. Included here are all the juicy details of interest to science aficionados, but would have slowed down the plot action. A glossary of terms is included as well as topical discussion guides and project ideas at the chapter level for those who want to get even more value from these stories, e.g., book club discussions, science teachers, and homeschoolers, who wish to take full advantage of the tetralogy's technical content. Dedicated fans will learn more about Cyraria, where much of the tetralogy's plot action occurs. This planet is unique due to its zero-degree inclination combined within a lemniscate (figure-8) orbit around a binary star system, which results in extreme seasonal weather with which the saga's characters must learn to survive. Besides explaining the reasons for its hostile climate, additional sections address Star Trails' alien races, in particular Cyraria's indigenous race, the bnolar, as well as its political structure.

They need the bnolar's help but can Cyraria's indigenous race be trusted? With Integrator forces closing in on world domination, if the caverns' secret gets out the Brightstars won't be the only ones who are doomed. But if the dream Dirck and Creena share plays out the consequences will be even worse.

Now he has chosen the liveliest and most relevant of his hundreds of magazine columns for the present collection. They constitute a vivid chronicle of events both in science fiction and the world in general over the past two decades. Robert Silverberg is one of the great veterans of fantasy and science fiction. During the course of a career that has now stretched across more than forty years, he has written dozens of novels and hundreds of short stories, many of them considered classics of the genre. He has won more major award nominations than any other writer in his field, and no less than nine Hugo and Nebula awards, the key s-f/fantasy trophies. His books have been translated into some eighteen languages and his short stories have appeared in every science-fiction and fantasy magazine in the world, as well as in Omni, Playboy, and Penthouse.
