Robert Stam's book Reflexivity in Film and Literature (1985) is one of the few extended studies of reflexivity ever written in the discipline of film studies. Its analysis and conclusions are worthwhile and insightful, but it also has a series of theoretical blind spots, the study of which challenges broader conceptions of reflexivity. Using the study of taste and drawing on Pierre Bourdieu, Joan Hawkins, Jeffrey Sconce, and others, this thesis attempts to broaden the scope of reflexivity. Through the study of Jean-Luc Godard's Weekend (1967) and films like Wes Craven's Scream 3 (2000) and Keenen Ivory Wayans' Scary Movie (2000), it shows how both "high" art and "low" art utilize reflexivity in unique, compelling ways, despite how critics and scholars focus on the former and diminish the latter. From this conclusion, it argues that, in fact, there are multiple "reflexivities" that must be studied further, each of which offer dynamic, exciting ways to approach cinema as diverse as camp, Carl Franklin's Devil in a Blue Dress (1995), and the work of Abbas Kiarostami and Terrence Malick.

Since the individuals are not just stimulus-response machines but more complex beings that think and are simultaneously conscious of their thought, re?exivity is potentially involved in all human acts of cognition and in all conceptualizations. On this basis, each human discourse can be characterized as a way of thought f- mulation and therefore, reveals a self-referring nature. On this level of re?exivity, the individual thought shapes beliefs and mental representations which give life to mental models and strive to predict future events and developments to support the individuals in their decision-making. Such mental models are re?ected by the - dividuals themselves and on the situation they are confronted with. According to the result of this recursive application, the individuals will then decide which model they want to refer to, or in other words, which model they want to absorb. Similarly, the individuals can make use of social theories and predictions which can therefore yield recursive effects and interfere with the phenomena they aim to depict. Revealed theories, if accepted, may in?uence the behaviour or the agents they focus on, either in the sense of validation of the theoretical content or in that of its rejection.

Reflexivity is a category that is too appealing not to arouse interest. It is a concept largely diffused in several psychological domains, as well as associated with epistemological, theoretical, methodological and practical discussions. At the same time, it is a very polysemic notion, understood and used in many different ways. If one approaches the notion and tries to identify the semantic boundaries of its usage, the seeming solidity of the term fades away, and a rather liquid semantic field emerges – a field where several interpretations coexist, being contingent to the context of the discussion in which they are implemented. This is the reason that makes the notion of reflexivity a prototypical example of the difficulties encountered by Psychology – and more in general social sciences –in the effort to define their own language. The term “reflexivity” ? like many others the language of Psychology is full of – is used in daily life and thus its semantics is shaped by the pragmatic, contingent functions it serves in such communicational circumstances. The apparent – from afar ? clearness of the concept does not concern its conceptual, epistemic status, but the capacity of the sign to contribute efficaciously to mediate and regulate the exchange. While French reflexive clitics have been widely studied, other forms of expressing co-reference within the clause have not received much attention. This monograph offers a diachronic study of the wider system of clause-mate co-reference in French, including the stressed pronouns, their suffixed form {soi/lui/elle}-même, and also the intensifier use of the latter. Its empirical backbone is a corpus analysis of the gradual replacement of stressed reflexive soi with the personal pronoun lui/elle from Old to Modern French.
