The purpose of computer vision is to make computers capable of understanding environments from visual information. Computer vision has been an interesting theme in the field of artificial intelligence. It involves a variety of intelligent information processing: both pattern processing for extraction of meaningful symbols from visual information and symbol processing for determining what the symbols represent. The term "3D computer vision" is used if visual information has to be interpreted as three-dimensional scenes. 3D computer vision is more challenging because objects are seen from limited directions and some objects are occluded by others. In 1980, the author wrote a book "Computer Vision" in Japanese to introduce an interesting new approach to visual information processing developed so far. Since then computer vision has made remarkable progress: various rangefinders have become available, new methods have been developed to obtain 3D informa tion, knowledge representation frameworks have been proposed, geometric models which were developed in CAD/CAM have been used for computer vision, and so on. The progress in computer vision technology has made it possible to understand more complex 3 D scenes. There is an increasing demand for 3D computer vision. In factories, for example, automatic assembly and inspection can be realized with fewer con straints than conventional ones which employ two-dimensional computer vision.

Inferring three-dimensional (3D) shape of real objects from visual information belongs to the main domain of the computer vision applications. Shape From Focus (SFF) is one of the passive methods that uses focus as a cue to infer the 3D structure of the object. In SFF, the objective is to find out the depth by measuring the distance of well-focused position of each object point from the camera lens. A sequence of images is acquired either by displacing the object in small steps or by changing the focal length of the lens in the camera. First, a focus measure, which is a criterion that can effectively measure the focus quality, is applied on each image pixel of the sequence. An initial depth map is obtained by maximizing the focus measure along the optical axis. In order to refine the initial depth estimate, different approximation and machine learning techniques have been used. In this book, various focus measures and SFF techniques based on machine learning approaches are discussed.

Moreover, by reducing the study of shape to the study of symmetry, he shows that symmetry is crucial to our everyday cognitive processing. Symmetry is the means by which shape is converted into memory. Perception is usually regarded as the recovery of the spatial layout of the environment. Leyton, however, shows that perception is fundamentally the extraction of time from shape. In doing so, he is able to reduce the several areas of computational vision purely to symmetry principles. Examining grammar in linguistics, he argues that a sentence is psychologically represented as a piece of causal history, an archeological relic disinterred by the listener so that the sentence reveals the past. Again through a detailed analysis of art he shows that what the viewer takes to be the experience of a painting is in fact the extraction of time from the shapes of the painting. Finally he highlights crucial aspects of the mind's attempt to recover time in examples of political subjugation.

This book is devoted to pattern analysis, that is, the automatic construc tion of a symbolic description for a complex pattern, like an image or con nected speech. Pattern analysis thus tries to simulate certain capabilities which go without saying in any human central nervous system. The increasing interest and growing efforts at solving the problems related with pattern analysis are motivated by the challenge of the problem and the expected ap plications.
