That portion lying south of the Passaic river was originally in Acquackanonk, which then embraced also the present City of Passaic and the Township of Little Falls. From the time that Paterson was founded, as a manufacturing town, there was friction between the old settlers and the new comers, which culminated in the incorporation of the township of Paterson. The Records herewith given illustrate the evolution of the simple township government into the more complex city organization, and, of course, are invaluable for the light they throw on the local history in general. To make them better understood, they have been supplemented by the laws passed from time to time relating to the township, and by extracts from contemporary local newspapers, to which have been also added, notes giving additional information regarding the matters touched upon in the text.
