Our place of holding religious service was in the old adobe courthouse. Here we organized a Presbyterian Church of twelve members, except the ordination of the elders. I also secured, before leaving, a lot for a church edifice. At that time there were probably about five thousand inhabitants. Four-fifths of these were Spanish. Of the other thousand, probably one-half were Americans; the other half were English, Scotch, Irish, German, Dutch, Swiss, French, Italians, Swedes, Norwegians, Russians and Europeans generally. Los Angeles at this time, as to population, was a miniature of California. I do not suppose there is a country or nation in the civilized world that has not a representative in California.
