Excerpt from Recollections of a Sea Wanderer's Life Messmates, hear a brother sailor Tell the dangers of the sea. When, to the intense astonishment of my acquaintances, it was noised abroad that I had determined to write the history Of my life at sea, I was overwhelmed with advices and suggestions, not only widely differing from one another, but utterly conflicting and irreconcilable. On one point, however, all my friends agreed that a preface was de rigueur, and that to write a book without a preface would be as absurd as to play Hamlet without Ophelia. Slowly and sadly I yielded a reluctant assent, and hence these few lines. Should my patrons pass them over unread, I shall be the last to blame them. For I believe that in most instances (i know it to be so in the present one) a preface is as superfluous and as useless as a Sergeant of Marines. Of course, it is quite natural that writers of the calibre of Mr. Dickens Should not deign to put pen to paper without claiming for their labors a higher motive than the design to gain wealth and reputation, or to furnish amusement for an idle hour. Like the mythical heroes of Old, Jack the Giant Killer and Don Quixote, their lance is ever poised to hurl the giant oppressor to earth, and right the wrongs of the afflicted and the fair. Excerpt from The Wanderers by Sea and Land: With Other Tales However, we departed, and soon found ourselves in the cars at the Boston depot, bound for New - York. When we had fairly seated ourselves and were whizzing along - the houses, trees, hills and valleys swimming by us as if they all had wings - our spirits revived. When the tongues of the children had got fairly loosed, they chatted like magpies. Every thing was new, and every thing was beautiful! Excerpt from A Wanderer's Song of the Sea, Vol. 1 The charm of the sea is ever new. Its songs are ever in the making. It is a fresh surprise for each one who ventures upon its illimitable way. In the bits of lyric contained in this slender volume I have sought to catch fleeting glimpses of ocean life and of sailor men in many parts of the Pacific, from the Russian voyager in Bering Sea to the Tahitian fisherman braving the perils of the deep in his open canoe, and his still more daring kinsmen who, some six hundred years ago, voy aged over thousands of miles of unknown water and discovered New Zealand. From 1823 to 1860 a fleet of small, fast brigs and schooners carried chests of opium from India to China, often facing the challenges of pirates and typhoons along the way. This shadowy trade, conducted by American, British, and Indian firms, thrived despite its moral and legal consequences. Drawing largely on primary sources, the story of the opium trade comes through in the voices of those who saw it firsthand. Appendices describe a favorite shipboard recipe, two of the ships involved in the trade and their crews, excerpts from accounts of the Opium War, and language equivalents for proper and place names. A bibliography is included, and maps and photographs help illumine this important and unusual period of history.

From his decision to leave school at fifteen to roam the world, to his recollections of life as a hobo on the Southern Pacific Railroad, as a cattle skinner in Texas, as a merchant seaman in Singapore and the West Indies, and as an itinerant bare-knuckled prizefighter across small-town America, here is Louis L'Amour's memoir of his lifelong love affair with learning—from books, from yondering, and from some remarkable men and women—that shaped him as a storyteller and as a man. Like classic L'Amour fiction, Education of a Wandering Man mixes authentic frontier drama--such as the author's desperate efforts to survive a sudden two-day trek across the blazing Mojave desert--with true-life characters like Shanghai waterfront toughs, desert prospectors, and cowboys whom Louis L'Amour met while traveling the globe. At last, in his own words, this is a story of a one-of-a-kind life lived to the fullest . . . a life that inspired the books that will forever enable us to relive our glorious frontier heritage.
