"Seismology has come a long way. Being the scientific study of seismic waves and their allied phenomena, it has entered a multidisciplinary realm. As the main tool, it provides a wealth of information when applied systematically to dig inside the earth structure. Notwithstanding, the utility of seismic waves has increased manifolds. Starting from knowing the epicenter of seismic events, it has influenced mapping of civil engineering structures such as Dams and Bridges, as well as huge constructions. Although there is no dearth of technical papers in the area of seismic waves, there is absence of a synchronized and recent coherent contents in the direction of seismic wave. The book will be a unique contribution with the aim of assimilating theory and practices. It will provide a comprehensive glimpse of recent advancements in this area with a strong unification of theory and practices. The main objective of the book is to present in-depth analysis of the theory and real implementations of seismic waves as versatile probes that would be integrated with modern and future perspectives. The current and the future strategies to be discussed in the relevant areas of seismic waves will be another boon for the readers. This book will cater to the needs of novices, researchers as well as practitioners. Additionally, the contents of the book will be useful for the undergraduate as well as postgraduate students of earth science discipline"--

The importance of seismic wave research lies not only in our ability to understand and predict earthquakes and tsunamis, it also reveals information on the Earth's composition and features in much the same way as it led to the discovery of Mohorovicic's discontinuity. As our theoretical understanding of the physics behind seismic waves has grown, physical and numerical modeling have greatly advanced and now augment applied seismology for better prediction and engineering practices. This has led to some novel applications such as using artificially-induced shocks for exploration of the Earth's subsurface and seismic stimulation for increasing the productivity of oil wells. This book demonstrates the latest techniques and advances in seismic wave analysis from theoretical approach, data acquisition and interpretation, to analyses and numerical simulations, as well as research applications. A review process was conducted in cooperation with sincere support by Drs. Hiroshi Takenaka, Yoshio Murai, Jun Matsushima, and Genti Toyokuni.

This book provides a general introduction to the most important geophysical exploration methods and their application to forensic sciences. It describes physical principles, campaign procedures and processing, as well as interpretation techniques, while also highlighting new acquisition and data analysis procedures. A large section of the book is devoted to applications, from measurements to the interpretation of data. Further, the book shows how to design and perform a forensic survey, and offers guidance on selecting the best method for the problem at hand, and on selecting the best type of data acquisition and processing. Written in straightforward language and chiefly intended as an introductory text for students in several scientific fields, the book also offers a useful guide for specialists who want to expand their expertise in this fascinating discipline.

Subsurface Exploration by Sonar Seismic Systems

The Boomer and the Pinger probe sonar seismic systems which are used for subsurface investigations in water-covered areas are described. The Boomer is used for deep sediment penetration studies, and the Pinger probe is used for detailed, high-resolution, shallow penetration work. The Boomer produces a low-frequency, high-energy pulse using a high-voltage discharge into an electromechanical transducer which produces an eddy-current plate repulsion. A continuous recording process produces a record of the reflections from the water-bottom and sub-bottom interfaces. The Pinger probe employs a short, high-intensity, 12-kc pulse from a crystal transducer. Recording is accomplished by a small, high-resolution Alden helix recorder. A number of examples of records are presented from each system.

The application of shear (S) waves in seismic petroleum exploration is in a critical stage of development. This book outles the past technologies, the current ones and the possible future ones. The current efforts in S- wave exploration described in this paper consist of investigation of problems in S- wave recording for example surface wave interference, processing for example, reflectiion static time corrections and interpretation for example correlation of reflections on P- and S- wave seismic sections. It also looks at a recent development that will advance S- wave exploration considerably.
