Merriam Press Military Monograph 35. Fifth Edition (March 2012). This is one of the titles in the so-called German Report Series produced by the U.S. Amy using German generals and other officers to author a variety of reports on their experiences, methods, organization, combat, etc., especially as it related to their war with the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front during World War II. These titles were produced during the early years of the Cold War when the U.S. Army fully expected to end up facing the Soviets in a future war. Thus, for the U.S. Army, these works became a type of training manual. For the present-day historian and World War II buff, they are a source of detail not easily found elsewhere. This pamphlet was prepared by a committee of former German generals and general staff officers under the supervision of the Historical Division, EUCOM, in the early part of 1948. All contributors had extensive experience on the eastern front during the period 1941-45. The principal author, for example, was successively G4 of an infantry division and assistant G4 of a panzer army in Russia. Contents: * Introduction; * German Plans and Preparations; * The Front Behind the Front; * Interference by Isolated Russian Units; * German Attempts to Restore the Local Economy; * The Rise of the Partisan Front; * Attacks on Rail Communications; * Disruptions of Highway Traffic; * Attacks on Supply Depots; * Conclusions; * 4 photos; * 2 maps.

All contributors had extensive experience on the eastern front during the period 1941-45. The principal author, for example, was successively G4 of an infantry division and assistant G4 of a panzer army in Russia. The reader is reminded that publications in the GERMAN REPORT SERIES were written by Germans from the German point of view. As in DA Pamphlet 20-230, Russian Combat Methods in World War II, and DA Pamphlet No. 20-231, Combat in Russian Forests and Swamps, the "Introduction" and "Conclusions" to this study present the views of the German author without interpretation by American personnel. Minor changes in form and in section titles have been made to secure greater clarity, and tactical examples have been rearranged to illustrate better the growth of the partisan front between 1942 and 1944. However, passages which reflect the author's prejudices and defects, whatever they may be, have not been changed and find the same expression in the following translation as they do in the original German.

This study on the problems of rear area security is based on German experiences during the Russian campaign. Particularly striking examples have been selected which show most clearly the. type of disturbances created by the Russians, the German countermeasures taken against them, and the lessons learned from experience. The same, similar, or different circumstances were encountered in other theaters of war. Accordingly, a variety of security measures be-came necessary and many new experiences were gathered. Yet, the fundamental questions remain the same everywhere.
