Excerpt from Mental Hygiene, 1921, Vol. 5 Behaviorism looks Upon what a man does in contrast to what he thinks and feels - that is, upon his conduct - as being the most important expression of his psychology. In other words, his actions are taken as the only authoritative expres sion of What he is. Thinking and feeling have significance only so far as they are preparatory for and lead to action. Theman who thinks and feels, but does not translate his ideas and emotions into action, is hamstrung by doubt; he is unable to choose among the several possibilities presented to him; out of the mass of possible actions he has not been able to choose one, and so his true self does not stand revealed. His powers of expression are sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought. Behaviorism believes that by their deeds ye Shall know them. However, I would remind you, in passing, that failure to act in the ordinary sense is itself action. A body comes to rest only because the forces that act upon it are for the time being in equilibrium. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Principles of Mental Hygiene This concentration of poorly paid and poorly housed factory hands led to conditions which obviously were unsanitary, and methods of sanitation were evolved to meet them and were enacted into statutes and adequate police authority provided for to eu force them. The social developments which have grown out of the attempts to correct the evil influences of the modern industrial system are extremely interesting and instructive to follow in their development for they represent on a small scale the principles in volved in the larger issues, some of which it will be the object of this book to discuss. Excerpt from Mental Hygiene: Two Years' Experience of a Clinical Psychologist In February, 1917, I opened an office in San Francisco, as consulting psychologist. In view of the newness of the work in applied psychology it has seemed to me that a sum mary of the number of consulters, the mental difficulties which led them to seek psychological advice, and the diag nosis and treatment given them, might be of interest and possibly of use to others. Excerpt from The Psychology of Insanity It must be clearly understood, moreover, that no attempt has been made to cover the whole field of insanity. On the contrary, certain sections of that field have been more or less arbitrarily selected, mainly on the ground that they yield fruitful results to psychological methods of investigation. I confidently anticipate that. In the future these methods will have a far wider application, but in the present state of our knowledge it must be frankly admitted that there are whole tracts of insanity in which they have only a very limited utility. This confession is all the more necessary on account of the tendency to unduly extensive generalisation evident in the work of many recent investigators. In View of the enormous complexity of mental processes, and the youthfulness ofpsychology, it is best to realise that progress must inevitably be slow, and that we must be content to feel our way to the scientific laws of the future.
