Anglican eucharistic theology varies between the different philosophical assumptions of realism and nominalism. Whereas realism links the signs of the Eucharist with what they signify in a real way, nominalism sees these signs as reminders only of past and completed transaction. This book begins by discussing the multifomity of the philosophical assumptions underlying Anglican eucharistic theology and goes on to present extensive case study material which exemplify these different assumptions from the Reformation to the Nineteenth century. By examining the multiformity of philosophical assumptions this book avoids the hermeneutic idealism of particular church parties and looks instead at the Anglican eucharistic tradition in a more critical manner.

A neuroscientist reveals unique aspects of decision making and the best strategies for protecting and enhancing the brain’s ability to navigate life’s uncertainties Contingency calculations—the ability to predict the outcomes of decisions and actions—are critical for survival and success. Our amazing brains continually process past and current experiences to enable us to make the most adaptive choices. But when the brain’s information systems are compromised—by such varying conditions as drug addiction, poverty, mental illness, or even privilege—we can lose the ability to arrive at informed decisions. In this engaging book, behavioral neuroscientist Kelly Lambert explores a variety of the modern factors that can lead to warped neural processing, or distorted realities she terms “brain bubbles.” Individuals who define success in terms of creature comforts and immediate gratification, for instance, may interact less with the physical and social world and thereby dull their ability to imagine varied contingency scenarios. The author underscores how continuous, meaningful, and well-grounded experiences are required if we are to make the best decisions throughout our lives.

“In Treasures of the Anglican Witness: A Collection of Essays, Dr. Chimela Samuel has given us a wonderful gift, dedicated to helping the faithful understand the rich legacy of prayer book spirituality by highlighting the contributions of such Anglican greats as Cranmer, Hooker, and Herbert. What is unique about Chimela’s approach is that in doing so, he offers a compelling argument for the importance of pastoral ministry in the Anglican tradition. Interwoven with his scholarly overview he concludes each chapter with recommendations and implications for the contemporary Anglican church. This is particularly timely given the discipleship crisis that is endangering younger generations and the future of the church. He issues a persuasive call for a return to our Anglican roots by way of a proper understanding of catechesis and how to enhance the teaching ministry of the church through appropriate processes of discipleship. In doing so he gives some very practical answers to why we do some of the things we do as Anglicans. It’s rare to have a piece of writing that is scholarly in nature, but also an instructive devotional tool for Anglicans throughout the worldwide communion. His collection of essays are an inspiring witness to the treasures we have in Anglicanism.” — Dr. Leslie F. Thyberg
