It is estimated that the functionally significant body of knowledge for a given medical specialty changes radically every 8 years. New special ties and "sub-specialization" are occurring at approximately an equal rate. Historically, established journals have not been able either to absorb this increase in publishable material or to extend their reader ship to the new specialists. International and national meetings, sympo sia and seminars, workshops, and newsletters successfully bring to the attention of physicians within developing specialties wh at is occur ring, but generally only in demonstration form without providing historical perspective, pathoanatomical correlates, or extensive discus sion. Page and time limitations oblige the authors to present only the essence of their material. Pediatric neurosurgery is an example of a specialty that has devel oped during the past 15 years. Over this period neurosurgeons have obtained special training in pediatric neurosurgery and then dedicated themselves primarily to its practice. Centers, Chairs, and educational programs have been established as groups of neurosurgeons in different countries throughout the world organized themselves respectively into national and international societies for pediatric neurosurgery. These events were both preceded and followed by specialized courses, national and international journals, and ever-increasing clinical and invest igative studies into all aspects of surgically treatable diseases of the child's nervous system.

Our society is entering its fourth decade of existence, as of the 30th Annual Meeting in London, and we felt that this event merited reflection - a look back into the past - so as to better appreciate where we come from and where our sub speciality stands today, also in order to understand our colleagues from the different areas in Europe. It is our hope that paediatric radiology in Europe will thereby be strengthened now that old barriers have fallen. At the second conjoint meeting of the ESPR and the SPR in Stockholm in 1991 a group of senior pediatric radiologists from all parts of Europe who felt that this occasion should be marked took the initiative to produce a book on the history of paediatric radiology focussing on the develop ments leading to the creation of the ESPR. We thank all the colleagues who participated in the initial meeting to plan this book in Stockholm in 1991 and again at the Budapest Meeting in 1992 and who subsequently prepared contributions for it. These are the authors of the respective chapters and with them we hope that our readers will appreciate this effort. Unfortunately, we were not able to cover every European country, in spite of our attempt to do so.

The concept of the ISS was developed in 1972 by three Internationally renowned radio logists; Harold G. Jacobson M. D. , Ronald O. Murray M. D. , and Jack Edeiken M. D. Their hard work and dedication allowed their vision to become a reality when the first meeting of the Society was held in 1974. The ISS is an interdisciplinary society dedicated to the learning, understanding, and teaching of musculoskeletal disorders. From the beginning, the Society established itself as a premier society, and its members, all experts in their respective fields, continue to make significant contributions to the field of medicine. The sharing of knowledge and a feeling of camaraderie by the members has made this truly a unique society. The Book of Members is in part a historical compilation of information about the Society. The first edition was compiled by Friedrich W. Heuck, Dr. med. , and spanned the first fifteen years of the Society. Dr. Heuck's contribution to the first edition is immeasurable". In the book, Harold Jacobson M. D. presented his historical perspective of the beginnings of the Society and Dr. Heuck presented information of the years that followed. I have brought that information up to date in this edition, and have added new facts about the Society and its membership. The amount of information about each member of the Society is purposefully less than that which was presented in the first edition, as the Society has grown to 427 members and 20 Honorary members .
