Quality in Translation is a compilation of papers from the ""Proceedings of the Third Congress of the International Federation of Translators."" This collection discusses the quality methods and criteria of translation, the training of translators, practical measures in translating, and terminologies. This text describes what a good translation should be. This book analyzes the problems encountered when translating from one language to another: language thought patterns, occurrence of transformations during translations, and the range of interpretability. Another concern this book addresses is the dilemma of quality versus quantity, especially in scientific materials when more studies need to be translated for wider exposure to the scientific community. The training of translators covers how Russian students are selected, the training methods, and emphasis on peculiarities of the English and Russian languages. Practical matters include choosing the right translator for the right job or subject, as well as some advice for clients seeking translators for embassy work. The terminological aspects in translating include the translator's confidence with his choice of words and how he uses a scientist's new coined words instead of his employing similar terminologies used by the scientist's colleagues. This book also cites the accomplishments of the International Committee for the Co-ordination of Terminological Activities. Translators and students studying foreign languages, overseas workers, consulate staff, linguists and administrators of international companies will find this book relevant.

La critique littéraire

La critique littéraire

Genre: Criticism

Critical Perspectives on Cameroon Writing

This landmark volume brings together a very rich harvest of forty critical essays on Cameroon literature by Cameroon literary scholars. The book is the result of the Second Conference on Cameroon Literature which took place at the University of Buea in 1994. The Buea conference was motivated by a determination to look at Cameroon literature straight into its face and criticize it using literary criteria of the strictest kind. Gone were the times when the criticism was complacent because it was believed that a nascent literature could easily be stifled by application of rather strict cannons of literary criticism. Both writers and critics had a lot to say. Subjects dealt with ranged from general topics on literature, survival and national identity, through specialized articles on prose, poetry, drama, translation, language, folklore, children's literature, Journalism and politics. It is the hope of the volume editors that the publication of these papers will instigate the kind of actions that were recommended and that the prolific nature of Cameroon literature will equally give rise to a prolific and robust criticism.

For millennia, literature across the globe has captured the essence of life, survival, and human relationships – how we come together and how we fall apart. These stories, born from diverse cultures and perspectives, transcend time and space to resonate with audiences far beyond their origins. Literature, a tapestry woven from many threads of logic, teaches us to embrace complexity and reject simplistic thinking. “Centres and Peripheries in Literature...” invites us to question why some works become classics while others fade into obscurity. In an age striving to define “world literature,” this book is especially relevant, examining the forces that shape literary canons and the interplay between Western and non- Western traditions. It boldly confronts the dominance of hegemonic canonism, shedding light on the power dynamics that determine which voices are heard and which are silenced. “This important book addresses issues of legitimization and consecration of literary works from around the world, highlighting how non-Western authors are pushed to the peripheries while Western authors are moved to the centre. It offers diverse perspectives on these dynamics.” Viviane Koua, (PhD) Department of World Languages, Literatures & Cultures, Auburn University, Auburn AL. USA. “Centres and Peripheries in Literatures: Interrogating Hegemonic Canonism critically examines how power dynamics between the Global North and South shape literary canons, urging scholars and readers to contemplate and recognize marginalized voices from the Global South.” Achirri Ismael, (PhD) Assistant Professor of Social Sciences and Policy Studies, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts, USA.
