William Putnam (1809-1853) was born in New York. He was descended from John Putnam (1580-1662), founder of the Putnam family of Salem, Massachusetts. William married Martha Ann Smith 28 October, 1830 in Schuyler County, Illinois. They were the parents of nine children. Their descendants live in Illinois, Nebraska, Arizona and Colorado.
