Excerpt from Publications of the Arkansas Historical Association, 1911, Vol. 3 This volume was due to appear December, 1910. The delay Q is'due to the failure of the general assembly of 1909 to make 9 provision for printing it. The association; hopes that hereafter the volumes will appear on time every two years. Since the 7 appearance of the last volume the general assembly has provided for the permanent organization of the movement to preserve and publish the history of the State. The History Commission has been made permanent, and has been given a salaried secretary, with offices in the state capitol, and the publications of the r usas Historical Association have been made a charge on the general printing fund. These laws are fundamental, and, from a legal viewpoint, thoroughly establish the cause of preserving Ql local history. The editor, in his capacity as secretary of the 2 history commission, has been so busy in his efforts to bring about these results that he has not had time to arrange for pro grams and meetings of the historical association. The editor is under obligations to Dr. C. G. Carroll of the University of Arkansas for assistance in reading the proof, rec ognition of which is hereby made. Excerpt from The Black and Gold, Vol. 1: April, 1911 After going something like two miles, the old man called a halt, telling us that we must now separate and arrange our selves at intervals along the track which the deer usually travelled. We stationed ourselves about two hundred yards from each other and breathlessly awaited the coming of the deer. The old hunter with his dogs went deep into the woods. Not a sound was to be heard except the occasional barking of the dogs. All at once the old hunter began yelling, and the dogs began barking at a fearful rate. Every man cocked his gun and waited in silence, scarcely breathing for fear of making a noise. Minutes seemed like hours, and we had begun to think that the deer had gone another way, when suddenly we heard something coming through the brush at breakneck speed. Peering through the undergrowth I saw a large buck coming toward my friend, Henry Smith. He came within twenty yards of Henry and then stood stone still for at least half a minute. 'henry stood there with his gun cocked, trembling as though he had a chill, until the deer turned and galloped off through the woods. When we saw that the deer was gone all of us cried: You stupid thing! Henry, why didn't you shott that deer? And Henry meekly replied: Why, really, fellows, when I saw that deer I was so frightened that I forgot to shoot. Excerpt from Down in Arkansas Each claimed credit for the road's existence. It was pretty hard to tell, just then, who did own it and it has been somewhat of a conundrum ever since. There was no one present to speak for the Dutch bond holders, though they had a sympathetic listener, whose abused mind wandered away to the foggy shores of Holland, and was lost in visions of bottles and bar rels and bung-holes. Excerpt from The Golden-Rod, Vol. 20: May, 1911 The school concert, held on the fourth of March, certainly fulfilled all our expectations. Miss Perkins surely deserves great praise for the planning and carrying out of the work. When this magazine reaches your hands, more than two-thirds of the school year will have passed. Now comes the home stretch in the. Work for the year and upon these three remain ing months may depend your fate in regard to marks, which will either pass you or pull you down to a not-promoted stage. If your marks are dangerously low, now is the time to strive to your utmost to put them on safe ground If your marks are satisfactory do not stop working in that complacent manner, peculiar to high school youngsters. Even high marks can very easily drop to a grade below sixty percent, through a few days of shirking. Don't let the spring fever, laziness, get into your system. Take Hustle for your motto, and put ofi the resting until af ter the close of school in June. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Sorosis, Vol. 17: October, 1910 June, 1911 The children are always adorable no matter where they are found. My particular friends were Jews and Italians, with whom I became acquainted while making investigations in respect to eyestrain among school-children. There was little cross-eyed, bow-legged Annie, who was characterized as shy and unmanageable in school. The principal said to me, You never will persuade her mother to let you take her to the clinic. She will swear at you; you will find her a regular tornado. However, I started out, climbed three dirty ights in a tene ment, felt the wall where I could not see my way, and finally found the right number, but_ no one was at home. After knocking, some one - rather half a dozen, appeared from vari ous dark places and jabbered Yiddish at me. Finally some one made me understand that the tailor on the first oor was Annie's father. I interviewed him. He was quite polite and told me that Annie did need glasses and that I could take her to the clinic, although he didn't know what his wife would say. The mother was not there, so I decided to go back to school after Annie. The principal informed me that Annie would not go with me since she was afraid of strangers. However, Annie took my hand and we started up the street. I was feeling quite elated at my success when we saw Annie's mother running frantically towards us. As soon as she began to talk a crowd collected, fifty or sixty dirty urchins, and some disreputable older people. All of my persuasive powers and arguments were used but to no purpose. Mrs. T. Would not allow that child to go with me. Then she in turn became eloquent and told me that even the poor people loved their children. Yes, we want to do everything for them. It is kind of you to take an interest in Annie, and then - she put her arm around me in a most affectionate manner. The little Jewish kiddies seemed to enjoy it. I felt too prominent in the midst of that Jewish throng on a narrow East Side street. I was so hemmed in by children that I hardly saw how to make an escape. Uppermost in my mind was the thought that my first case was a failure but just as I was leaving, Mrs. T. Said: I will take Annie to an oculist this very after noon. Some days later I visited the school and found that the child was wearing glasses. Several months later her eyes were very nearly straight. Her teacher remarked that she was doing much better in school and was quite friendly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
