Excerpt from American Colonial Tracts Monthly, Vol. 1 The Compiler of the following Volume having been led by circumstances into an examination somewhat extensive, of the sources of our history, experienced much difficulty in procuring the Pamphlets and smaller Tracts that relate to the Origin, Settlement and Progress of the American Colonies. Of the vast number of publications of this description that were made during the two centuries and a half succeeding the discovery of America, a few only can be found in this country, and these are almost entirely confined to libraries connected with our public institutions: many of them are of great value as authentic historical records, and all are interesting to those who take pleasure in tracing step by step the progress of the Colonies, in population, wealth, and power, within the comparatively short period that intervened between the landing of the first white man upon the Continent, and the establishment of a free and independent Government by the People of the United States of America. These considerations suggested the plan of the Collection now commenced. Of the thirteen Tracts contained in the present volume, Nos. 2 and 10 have not heretofore been printed, and Nos. 8 and 9 now appear for the first time in a connected form: the others, as will be seen by referring to the title pages which are copied at large, are republications. Excerpt from Down in Arkansas Each claimed credit for the road's existence. It was pretty hard to tell, just then, who did own it and it has been somewhat of a conundrum ever since. There was no one present to speak for the Dutch bond holders, though they had a sympathetic listener, whose abused mind wandered away to the foggy shores of Holland, and was lost in visions of bottles and bar rels and bung-holes. Once the Union Army gained control of the upper rivers of the Mississippi Valley during the first half of 1862, slow and heavy ironclads proved ineffective in patrolling the waters. Hastily outfitted steamboats were covered with thin armor and pressed into duty. These "tinclads" fought Confederate forces attacking from the riverbanks, provided convoy for merchant steamers, enforced revenue measures, and offered tow, dispatch, and other fleet support services. This history documents the service records and duties of these little-known vessels of the Union fleet.
