Excerpt from Public School Orchestras and Bands The aim of the teacher of fine arts is almost equally clear. If he gives instruction in painting, singing, or playing an instrument, it is plain that the instructor must guide, but the student must perform; that no matter how much the master may know of the theory of the art, that knowledge will have meaning for the student and can be imparted to him only in connection with his own doing; that all formal lessons, such as learning to read the score, finger exercises, the manipula tion of the stops, the tuning of the instrument, etc., are but necessary parts of a larger process and without significance by themselves. Not illustrated. 1920 edition. Excerpt: ... physician prescribing the use of the saxophone to a patient suffering with dullness of hearing, as a tonic to the aural nerves." (From Mistakes and Disputed Points in Music by Elson). While the soprano, alto, tenor, and melody saxophones are nicely adapted for use in the elementary schools, the baritone, on account of its size and weight, is not apt to be serviceable, except in the high school. A quartet of saxophones is always an attractive combination to use for concerts. Moreover, they lend a fullness and sonorousness to a band that makes their absence thereafter lamentably noticeable. No one feature in a school will do so much to bring that school into favor with both the public and the student body, as a good band. Where the principal encourages such an organization and the proper kind of an instructor is in charge, it is neither difficult nor impossible to permanently maintain a good band in any high school. CHAPTER IX. OFFICIAL MITSICAL ORGANIZATIONS Elementary Schools' Band and Orchestra (See Illustrations Nos. 15 and 16) As there are frequent demands for public appearance of the school organizations, it is advisable to have some official organizations, endorsed and approved by the board of education to represent the work of the entire department instead of one particular school. Such a method eliminates any display of favoritism, gives no cause for jealousy, and provides a guarantee that some finished work will always be ready for public presentation. To achieve these results, an orchestra and band known as the Elementary Schools' Orchestra and Elementary Schools' Band is organized in Oakland to which all advanced players from any of the schools are eligible. Complete instrumentation and a well balanced...

Excerpt from The Music Hour, Vol. 3: Grade Nine and High School The music hour is the expression of a significant idea - the production of a series of music textbooks which, in pedagogy and in material, shall fulfil the highest ideals of educators and musicians. The pedagogy of the series, based on years of classroom experience, is in thorough accord with the conclusions of leading authorities on child study and educational psychology. The material, chosen solely on the basis of musical worth, represents a wide range of selection, including folk songs of all countries, classic compositions of all times, and songs written for the series by many of the foremost composers of the day. One of the distinctive features of the high school years is the changing voices of the boys. In some localities the change occurs earlier than in other places. The songs in this book are so arranged that provision is made for such differences in vocal conditions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The American Orchestra and Theodore Thomas Without sounding the ever-ready pipe of vainglory, we may justly affirm that in one division of representative art the Amer ican achievement has gone beyond debate. The grand orchestra is now' more than our foremost cultural asset; it has become our Sign Of honor among the nations. Even if sceptical or scorn-f ful about our other endeavors, the world assigns to this a verity of excellence. Starting so much later than the rest and starting handicapped, we seem, despite shortcomings and our own in credulities, to have developed the orchestra above the average attainment. If we lag about other arts, we lead in this. Forty years or so have set down most of the visible signs of this gracious growth. Only so far back as 1876 they were not known to mortal sight, certainly, and otherwise had been scouted as impossible. Two bands, one leader, and an interest so small it seemed to pessimist's' a'higher power of nothing may be counted as the sorry whole of our performance in that year. In many places were small groups of instrumentalists that played together unstably and were regarded by most of their fellow townsmen as partly insane; in many-places there was for vocal music a large, sincere, and always expanding devotion. But beyond two bands and one leader, the thing we know now as the grand or symphony orchestra functioned chiefly to the ear of hope.
