Life in Baghdad, Iraq, in October 2003 and again in 2006 was like living in a Crock-Pot. It was hot, and the breeze, if you can call it that, was just as hot. We would travel to strange destinations to attend meetings, drop off supplies, or pick up soldiers. We even performed guard duty and with the scorching temperatures. The protective gear that we wore added about twenty degrees and an extra thirty pounds. The temperature was approximately 140 degrees or better. I was told to put on some suntan lotion, and I thought the officer was making a joke because I did not know a black man could get a sunburn in the desert; this is to be true. Survivors of sexual trauma can be female or male and come from every ethnicity, family structure, and socioeconomic group. Whether or not you are a survivor, it is very likely you know someone who is. The personal stories in Hear My Story: Walking with Survivors of Sexual Trauma offer hope that healing is possible — and are an invaluable aid for helping others find healing. Each writer shares her or his own journey from the edge of the cliff, through the valley, and into the Lord’s arms. This book is meant not just for survivors of sexual assault but for those who know and love them. Sometimes the people we count on to help us deal with trauma are stuck in their own reality, unwilling or unable to acknowledge that darkness and evil has happened to someone they love — and possibly at the hands of someone they know. A true companion on the journey to healing must listen to each story with empathy, believe that it really happened, grieve with the brokenhearted, and commit to participating in the journey to complete inner healing. This book is not only for the quarter of our society that has been wounded but for anyone who is called to accompany the wounded toward healing. Let the voices in this book become a beacon of hope.

Standing at that magical place where sand meets sea, you likely have imagined putting a message in a bottle, consigning it to the waves, hoping it might some day reach another shore, and then not only be read but, incredibly across space and time, make a difference in other lives now connected to your own. It has happened to me, and I must sing of it. In the autumn of 1966 I let the waves carry off a poempassed around to students, family and friends, no need for even my name on it. Its message was simple: Keep heart, you are not alone; love, stronger than strong walls, will come, helping your heart in hiding grow wings, feeble perhaps at first, but wings! Word astoundingly began to come back in 1969, and has continued since, that Please Hear What Im Not Saying was indeed reaching other shores, across space and time was indeed making a difference in other lives. What follows attests to the power of words from the heart to touch other hearts, sometimes even to change other lives. Read on. You, too, will sing of it.

Partition occurring simultaneously with British decolonization of the Indian subcontinent led to the formation of independent India and Pakistan. While the political and communal aspects of the Partition have received some attention, its enormous personal and psychological costs have been mostly glossed over, particularly when it comes to the splitting of Bengal. The memory of this historical ordeal has been preserved in literary archives, and these archives are still being excavated. This book examines neglected narratives of the Partition of India in 1947 to study the traces left by this foundational trauma on the national- and regional-cultural imaginaries in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. To arrive at a more complex understanding of how Partition experiences of violence, migration, and displacement shaped postcolonial societies and subjectivities in South Asia, the author analyses, through novels and short stories, multiple cartographies of disorientation and anxiety in the post-Partition period. The book illuminates how contingencies of political geography cut across personal and collective histories, and how these intersections are variously marked and mediated by literature. Examining works composed in Bengali and other South Asian languages, this book seeks to broaden and complicate existing conceptions of what constitutes the Partition literary archive. A valuable addition to the growing field of Partition studies, this book will be of interest to scholars of South Asian history, gender studies, and literature.

Reflecting back on her college graduation in 2011, Dawn thought her life was finally coming together, that all of the hard work she put in working full-time, attending college, and being a parent was finally going to pay off. After all, she survived both physical and sexual child abuse by her father, was bullied by her peers throughout her early elementary and high school years, and, at age forty, was winning her battle with depression--so she could survive anything, she thought. Well, a few months after graduation, the life she thought she was going to have was about to come crashing down. A trip to the doctor, because of a few unusual symptoms, turned out that she had young-onset Parkinson's disease. Just when she thought she had survived the biggest hurdle of her life, life threw another curveball at her. In her story, she will take her readers back to the beginning, where it all started, up to her life now, living with Parkinson's. She hopes that by telling her story, it will inspire others not to give up. No matter how many times life knocks you down, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We all have a purpose. We just have to find out what it is. By the end of her book, you will find that through the storms, she has found her purpose. Twenty percent of the profits on the sale of this book will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation and the Parkinson's Foundation. Twenty percent will go to the foundation she established in April 2022 called Dawn's Hope Inc.

What happens when a mother does not or cannot love her daughter? My Broken Mug: The Memoir of an Unwanted Daughter focuses on explaining what it feels like to be rejected by your own mother. An eye-opening journey in the life of Beatrice, the unappreciated daughter: she examines her mother’s toxic behavior by pointing out the emotional trauma she had endured during the first two decades of her life. The impact this had on her life shaped the blueprint for most of her relationships during adulthood, where she experienced rejection once again: she went through two divorces and faced physical and emotional abuse by her second husband. For most of her life, Beatrice lacked self-confidence and struggled to control her emotions until she experienced a period of profound Spiritual Awakening that led to many positive changes, some of which are still ongoing. Today, she spreads the Word of God and uses her negative experiences to help others. A chosen disciple of God, Beatrice Lotter, is a Pastor from South Africa. Her whole life is a testimony to how a person can overcome challenging circumstances and obstacles. She is a daughter born out of wedlock whose name was later changed to Annemarie by the will of her stepfather’s family. Nevertheless, she rightfully took back what was hers: her original identity. Over the years, Beatrice has blossomed into a spiritual leader who helps others understand that they can get through any difficulties that come in their way, just like she did. Despite the many hurdles, she always managed to pick herself back up and move forward because even in dark places, there is light. Today, Beatrice encourages others to receive God’s guidance and love, and, not surprisingly, her name means “she who brings happiness”: God has given her a gift and, it is indeed a blessing to be around her.

“An outstanding addition to the literature on theatre and performance in situations of conflict and post-conflict.” —New Theatre Quarterly What are the stakes of cultural production in a time of war? How is artistic expression prone to manipulation by the state and international humanitarian organizations? In the charged political terrain of post-genocide Rwanda, post-civil war Uganda, and recent violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Laura Edmondson explores performance through the lens of empire. Instead of celebrating theatre productions as expression of cultural agency and resilience, Edmondson traces their humanitarian imperatives to a place where global narratives of violence take precedence over local traditions and audiences. Working at the intersection of performance and trauma, Edmondson reveals how artists and cultural workers manipulate narratives in the shadow of empire and how empire, in turn, infiltrates creative capacities.
