Electron microscopy in the biological sciences can be divided into two disciplines. The first, concerned with high resolution detail of particles or periodic structures, is mostly based on sound theoretical principles of physics. The second, by far the larger discipline, is interested in the information obtainable from thin sections. The theoretical back ground to those groups of techniques for preparing and looking at thin sections is often inexact and "loose", for want of a better word. What should be chemistry is often closer to alchemy. This kind of electron microscopy is often enshrined with mystical recipes, handed down from generation to generation. Admittedly, many of the processes involved, such as those required to embed tissue in epoxy resins, involve multiple interconnected steps, which make it difficult to follow the details of anyone of these steps. If all these steps are shrouded in some mystery, however, can one really trust the final image that emerges on the EM screen? When we present the data in some semi quantitative form is there really no better way to do it than to categorize the parameters with ++, +/-, etc? What happens when one labels the sections with antibodies? Does the whole business necess arily need to be more of an "art" than a "science"? Upon reflecting on these problems in 1981, I had the impression that many of the multi-authored textbooks that existed then (and that have appeared since) tended to exacerbate or at least perpetuate this

Comprehensive Biomaterials II, Second Edition, Seven Volume Set brings together the myriad facets of biomaterials into one expertly-written series of edited volumes. Articles address the current status of nearly all biomaterials in the field, their strengths and weaknesses, their future prospects, appropriate analytical methods and testing, device applications and performance, emerging candidate materials as competitors and disruptive technologies, research and development, regulatory management, commercial aspects, and applications, including medical applications. Detailed coverage is given to both new and emerging areas and the latest research in more traditional areas of the field. Particular attention is given to those areas in which major recent developments have taken place. This new edition, with 75% new or updated articles, will provide biomedical scientists in industry, government, academia, and research organizations with an accurate perspective on the field in a manner that is both accessible and thorough. Reviews the current status of nearly all biomaterials in the field by analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, performance, and future prospects Covers all significant emerging technologies in areas such as 3D printing of tissues, organs and scaffolds, cell encapsulation; multimodal delivery, cancer/vaccine - biomaterial applications, neural interface understanding, materials used for in situ imaging, and infection prevention and treatment Effectively describes the many modern aspects of biomaterials from basic science, to clinical applications

Surface Analytical Techniques for Probing Biomaterial Processes describes four surface analytical techniques for probing dynamic, in situ processes at the biomaterial interface. The book presents the theoretical basis and biomaterial applications of: Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Spectroscopy (TIRFS) Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) Ellipsometry Dynamic Contact Angle (DCA) analysis This book is not a review, but a practical description of the techniques to enable the biomaterialist to assess and intelligently use any one of the methods described. It deliberately avoids addressing expensive or non-dynamic tests, and concentrates instead on the growing field of biomaterials. Theory is presented in a simple and readable manner, experimental procedures are described, and the type of information obtained is discussed. It is written not just for the avid or interested reader but also, and perhaps more important, for the end user.

This handbook addresses the needs of those who are involved in inventing, developing, and testing implants and are concerned about the interactions between biomaterial and body tissue. The authors explore the physical, chemical, mechanical and regulatory considerations of synthetic materials used in surgical and implant procedures, and how these factors impact the latest developments and new approaches. This updated edition provides the biomaterials professional with necessary information on a range of issues, including bulk characterization, surface evaluations, toxicological evaluations, in vitro methods for safety evaluation, methods for evaluating materials in special applications, surgical considerations, systems implantology, soft and hard tissue history, regulatory aspects, and clinical trials.
