Can the electric and magnetic fields (EMF) to which people are routinely exposed cause health effects? This volume assesses the data and draws conclusions about the consequences of human exposure to EMF. The committee examines what is known about three kinds of health effects associated with EMF: cancer, primarily childhood leukemia; reproduction and development; and neurobiological effects. This book provides a detailed discussion of hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization for each. Possible Health Effects of Exposure to Residential Electric and Magnetic Fields also discusses the tools available to measure exposure, common types of exposures, and what is known about the effects of exposure. The committee looks at correlations between EMF exposure and carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, neurobehavioral effects, reproductive and developmental effects, effects on melatonin and other neurochemicals, and effects on bone healing and stimulated cell growth.

This book addresses new technologies being considered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for screening airport passengers for concealed weapons and explosives. The FAA is supporting the development of promising new technologies that can reveal the presence not only of metal-based weapons as with current screening technologies, but also detect plastic explosives and other non-metallic threat materials and objects, and is concerned that these new technologies may not be appropriate for use in airports for other than technical reasons. This book presents discussion of the health, legal, and public acceptance issues that are likely to be raised regarding implementation of improvements in the current electromagnetic screening technologies, implementation of screening systems that detect traces of explosive materials on passengers, and implementation of systems that generate images of passengers beneath their clothes for analysis by human screeners.

High voltage engineering is extremely important for the reliable design, safe manufacture and operation of electric devices, equipment and electric power systems. The 21st International Symposium on High Voltage Engineering, organized by the 90 years old Budapest School of High Voltage Engineering, provides an excellent forum to present results, advances and discussions among engineers, researchers and scientists, and share ideas, knowledge and expertise on high voltage engineering. The proceedings of the conference presents the state of the art technology of the field. The content is simultaneously aiming to help practicing engineers to be able to implement based on the papers and researchers to link and further develop ideas.

Employees, employers and the government have all become very awareof the effects on health of the work environment. As a result, thissubject area is rapidly developing with recent changes inlegislation, sampling and measurement methods, as well as a newemphasis on the psychological impact of work, and the importance ofan appropriate work-life balance. The purpose of this book is to provide a clear and conciseaccount of the principles of occupational hygiene and, as such, itis suitable for students studying for degree courses in thissubject and for the MFOM. It is also suitable for occupationalphysicians and nurses, to safety representatives and to tradeunionists. This edition sees the introduction of nine new chapters coveringrecently emerged topics such as work/life balance, workorganisation and pyschological issues.

UHV Transmission Technology enables power system employees and the vast majority of those caring for UHV transmission technology to understand and master key technologies of UHV transmission. This book can be used as a technical reference and guide for future UHV projects. UHV transmission has many advantages for new power networks due to its capacity, long distance potential, high efficiency and low loss. Development of UHV transmission technology is led by infrastructure development and renewal, as well as smart grid developments, which can use UHV power networks as the transmission backbone for hydropower, coal, nuclear power and large renewable energy bases. UHV is a key enabling technology for optimal allocation of resources across large geographic areas, and has a key role to play in reducing pressure on energy and land resources. - Provides a complete reference on the latest ultra-high voltage transmission technologies - Covers practical applications made possible by theoretical material, extensive proofs, applied systems examples and real world implementations, including coverage of problem solving and design and manufacturing guidance - Includes case studies of AC and DC demonstration projects - Features input from a world-leading UHV team
