The historical relationship between capital and labor has evolved in the past few decades. One particularly noteworthy development is the rise of shared capitalism, a system in which workers have become partial owners of their firms and thus, in effect, both employees and stockholders. Profit sharing arrangements and gain-sharing bonuses, which tie compensation directly to a firm’s performance, also reflect this new attitude toward labor. Shared Capitalism at Work analyzes the effects of this trend on workers and firms. The contributors focus on four main areas: the fraction of firms that participate in shared capitalism programs in the United States and abroad, the factors that enable these firms to overcome classic free rider and risk problems, the effect of shared capitalism on firm performance, and the impact of shared capitalism on worker well-being. This volume provides essential studies for understanding the increasingly important role of shared capitalism in the modern workplace.

First published in 1910, 'Profit-Sharing and the Labour Question' is a fascinating look at an alternative to traditional labor-management relations. Drawing on extensive research and real-world examples, author Thomas W. Bushill makes a compelling case for the benefits of profit-sharing, arguing that it can lead to greater productivity, higher employee satisfaction, and a more harmonious workplace. Excerpt from Profit-Sharing and the Labour Question At Mr. Bushill srequest, I very gladly write a few words introductory of his work. The sole justification I possess for doing so lies in my having, in 1884, published the first English book containing anything like a general survey of profit-sharing undertakings in industry, agriculture and trade. The fact of my being personally unversed in practical business was in some quarters seized on in order to weaken the effect of my representations, although these largely and avowedly consisted of direct translations from statements made by foreign profit-sharing employers and employed. It gives me, therefore, especial pleasure to be allowed now to introduce an account of a particular instance of successful profit-sharing by a writer whose position absolutely excludes this form of depreciation, while the fact of his firm being an English one cuts a second string of the detractory bow, that profit-sharing may be all very well on the Continent, but will not do in this country." A treatise on, or history of, profit-sharing would be alike out of place in this introduction, but I ask the readers attention to a few general remarks on that mode of remunerating labour, made solely on my own responsibility.
