Note. - Where a unit is marked*, one or more similar units exists in peace either on a Peace Establishment or as a cadre. Other units do not exist under the same name in peace. 3. An Infantry Division has R. E. Headquarters, 2 Field Companies, 1 Divisional Telegraph Company. Establishments only are laid down for other units, numbers of which can be formed as required for any particular campaign. 4. For the Field Army, in addition to existing authorized Field Units, a Printing Company will shortly be organized. A search Light Company exists in peace and may be utilized in war. An Air Battalion also exists in peace from which it is proposed to form the Balloon Companies in war, and which will doubtless in the near future supply both Airship and Aeroplane Detachments. 5. The work of Field Troops and Companies, Signal Companies and Fortress Units will be dealt with in special lectures. In this I will shortly summarize the work of other units. 7. The Balloon Company which may now be taken to include aeroplanes and airships will be employed for general strategical and tactical reconnaissance at all periods of a campaign and for observation of artillery fire. It will probably also be utilized for transport of maps and special reports, for transport of general and staff officers for special meetings and occasionally to give higher commanders a bird's-eye view of the battlefield. It is under the direct control of the Commander-in-Chief (F. S. Regs., I., 5 - 5). Each Balloon Company can put only one captive balloon or set of kites in the air at one time. The constitution as regards aeroplanes and airships is not yet laid down. 8. The Bridging Train is intended to supplement the small amount of rapid bridging equipment allotted to the Field Companies. Excerpt from Professional Papers of the Corps of Royal Engineers, 1877, Vol. 1: Royal Engineer Institute, Occasional Papers This recommendation was adopted at the Corps Meeting, and during the autumn of 1876 three Occasional Papers were published separately in pamphlet form. During this year four pamphlets, each containing four or five papers, have been published, and these are now bound together in the lst volume of the new series. The three papers published in 1876 were not printed uniformly nor paged consecutively, and have therefore not been included in the lat volume, but bound together as an appendix to it. The change of form in the Professional Papers is, it will be seen, principally one of size; and the matter of each volume may be obtained either in pamphlet form, immediately on publication, or bound up, at the end of the year, uniform with the previous volumes of Professional Papers. There is no reason why these Occasional Papers should not be made of very great service to the Corps; but for this end the co operation of every member is necessary; and we trust that during the coming year individual officers, both at home and abroad, and especially in India, will find time to communicate many interesting results of their experiences in carrying on the work upon which they may be employed, or to contribute for the benefit of the Corps at large any use Ful information which they may have acquired in the course of their various duties.
