'A Field Book of the Stars' is a guide to help anyone appreciate the beauty and wonder of the constellations in the night sky. With simplicity and brevity, the author outlines the scheme of study, focusing only on matter that can be observed with the naked eye or an opera-glass. The book covers only those constellations visible from the average latitude of the New England and Middle States and in the particular season in which they are favorably situated for observation. The author includes maps of the heavens, meteors, the motions of the stars, and the Milky Way to enhance the reader's experience.

The North American recent mammals in the United States National Museum number about 166,000 specimens, including 1,435 types. More than three-fourths of this material is in the Biological Survey collection, United States Department of Agriculture, the remainder, including the seals, sirenians, ceataceans, and all of the older, more historic specimens, is in the Museum proper. The material derived from these two sources furnishes so complete a representation of the mammals of North America that, of the 2,554 forms now recognized, only 171 are not included.
