This book provides a bridge between the introductory research methods books and the discipline-specific, higher level texts. Its unique feature is the coverage of the detailed process of research rather than the findings of research projects. Chapter authors have been carefully selected by their expertise, discipline and location to give an eclectic range of perspectives. Particular care has been taken to balance positivist with interpretivist approaches throughout. The authors focus is on the practical consequences of research philosophies, strategies and techniques by using their own research and by evaluating the work of others. Advanced Research Methods in the Built Environment addresses common topics raised by postgraduate level researchers rather than dealing with all aspects of the research process. Issues covered range from the practicalities of producing a journal article to the role of theory in research. The material brought together here provides a valuable resource for the training and development of doctoral and young researchers and will contribute to a new sense of shared methodological understanding across built environment research.

Today, online technologies are at the core of most fields of engineering and society as a whole . This book discusses the fundamentals, applications and lessons learned in the field of online and remote engineering, virtual instrumentation, and other related technologies like Cross Reality, Data Science & Big Data, Internet of Things & Industrial Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, Cyber Security, and M2M & Smart Objects. Since the first Remote Engineering and Virtual Instrumentation (REV) conference in 2004, the event has focused on the use of the Internet for engineering tasks, as well as the related opportunities and challenges. In a globally connected world, interest in online collaboration, teleworking, remote services, and other digital working environments is rapidly increasing. In this context, the REV conferences discuss fundamentals, applications and experiences in the field of Online and Remote Engineering as well as Virtual Instrumentation. Furthermore, the conferences focus on guidelines and new concepts for engineering education in higher and vocational education institutions, including emerging technologies in learning, MOOCs & MOOLs, and open resources. This book presents the proceedings of REV2020 on “Cross Reality and Data Science in Engineering” which was held as the 17th in series of annual events. It was organized in cooperation with the Engineering Education Transformations Institute and the Georgia Informatics Institutes for Research and Education and was held at the College of Engineering at the University of Georgia in Athens (GA), USA, from February 26 to 28, 2020.

This volume presents a selection of the best papers from the 21st Annual University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Linguistics Symposium. Researchers from linguistics, psychology, computer science, and philosophy, using many different methods and focusing on many different facts of language, addressed the question of the existence of linguistic rules. Are such rules best seen as convenient tools for the description of languages, or are rules actually invoked by individual language users? Perhaps the most serious challenge to date to the linguistic rule is the development of connectionist architecture. Indeed, these systems must be viewed as a serious challenge to the foundations of all of contemporary linguistics.Four broad themes emerged from the Milwaukee conference, corresponding to the four parts of the volume. Part I centers on arguments for the existence of symbolic rules in linguistic competence and performance. Part II contains arguments against symbolic rules, presenting connectionist models and other alternatives to the symbolic paradigm. Parts III and IV take up two issues that are central to a number of language researchers: Language acquisition and learnability, and modularity. These issues are addressed from within both rule-based and non-rule-based perspectives.Contributors: Farrell Ackerman, Michael Barlow, Catherine Best, David Corina, Roberta Corrigan, Kim Daugherty, Bruce Derwing, Jeff Elman, Alice Faber, John Goldsmith, Helen Goodluck, Neil Jacobs, Richard Janda, Brian Joseph, Michael Kac, Alan Kawamoto, Suzanne Kemmer, Susan Lima, Brian MacWhinney, Steven Pinker, Alan Prince, Gerald Sanders, Hinrich Schutze, Mark Seidenberg, Royal Skousen, Nicholas Sobin, Joseph Stemberger, Gregory Stone, Ann Thyme, Robert Van Valin.

Agricultural lands worldwide are deteriorating, becoming acidic and losing essential humus content. This impacts global food quality and nutrition. Causes include extreme natural events and harmful human activities like deforestation. The consequences are stark—shrinking agricultural land, reduced fertility, lower crop yields, and increased costs. Developing nations face food shortages, population decline, and shortened life expectancy. The urgency demands international cooperation, legislation, and technological advancements. Ecological Aspects of Soil and Land Preservation delves into this critical issue, emphasizing the need for collective action and sustainable solutions. Ecological Aspects of Soil and Land Preservation serves as a resource for scholars, students, and professionals committed to addressing the crisis. This book collects, summarizes, and analyzes the latest information on agricultural land and forest degradation. Beyond that, it introduces groundbreaking hypotheses, theories, and solutions, enriching the scientific community's understanding. The objective is clear: to be an informative resource that not only sheds light on the problem but also catalyzes actionable solutions.
