These Conference Proceedings are intended to summarise the latest developments in diffraction and scattering theory as reported at the IU TAM Symposium on Diffraction and Scattering in Fluid Mechanics and Elasticity held in Manchester, England on 16-20 July 2000. This in formal meeting was organised to discuss mathematical advances, both from the theoretical and more applied points of view. However, its pri mary goal was to bring together groups of researchers working in dis parate application areas, but who nevertheless share common models, phenomenological features arising in such problems, and common math ematical tools. To this end, we were delighted to have four Plenary Speakers, Professors Allan Pierce, Ed Kerschen, Roger Grimshaw and John Willis FRS, who are undisputed leaders in the four thematic ar eas of our meeting (these are respectively acoustics, aeroacoustics, water or other free surface waves, elasticity). These Proceedings should offer an excellent vehicle for continuing the dialogue between these groups of researchers. The participants were invited because of their expertise and recent contributions to this field. Collectively, there were around 90 contrib utors to the Symposium from some 13 countries located all around the world. These included 45 speakers, 35 co-authors and about 10 other delegates. Individuals came from many of the major international cen tres of excellence in the field of scattering theory.

Many scientists and engineers do not realize that, under certain conditions, friction can lead to the formation of new structures at the interface, including in situ tribofilms and various patterns. In turn, these structures-usually formed by destabilization of the stationary sliding regime-can lead to the reduction of friction and wear. Friction-I

Surface texturing has been recognized as a method for enhancing the tribological properties of surfaces for many years. Adding a controlled texture to one of two faces in relative motion can have many positive effects, such as reduction of friction and wear and increase in load capacity. To date, the true potential of texturing has not been realized due to the severe lack of detailed information about the mechanistic functional details of texturing in a tribological situation. Inspiration and Design for Bio-Inspired Surfaces in Tribology: Emerging Research and Opportunities is a pivotal reference source that focuses on surface engineering techniques to mimic biological materials. Highlighting a broad range of topics including bio-mimetics, contact analysis, and thermodynamics, this book is ideally designed for engineers, environmentalists, academicians, researchers, and students.

This book deals with basic physical properties related to the nonlinear interaction of light and matter. Nonlinear effects in atomic (molecular) systems and condensed matter are described, and classical phenomena as well as phenomena requiring a field-quantised description are covered. Leading authorities in nonlinear optics have reviewed themes of current interest in the research literature, and described general principles of importance for newcomers to the field.

The papers in this volume form a bridge between the mathematical and engineering theories in the application of stochastic differential equations. The engineering aspects are represented by a broad spectrum of potential applications and their heuristic or pragmatic approaches to a variety of problems. The mathematical aspects discuss the errors inherent in numerical procedures and provide appropriate theoretical frameworks. The 27 papers presented in this volume testify to the achievement of Euromech 250 in bringing engineers and mathematicians together in the successful dissemination of recent developments in nonlinear structural systems.
