This book presents the proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Application of Fuzzy Systems and Soft Computing (ICAFS 2018), held in Warsaw, Poland on August 27–28, 2018. It includes contributions from diverse areas of soft computing such as uncertain computation, Z-information processing, neuro-fuzzy approaches, evolutionary computing and others. The topics of the papers include theory of uncertainty computation; theory and application of soft computing; decision theory with imperfect information; neuro-fuzzy technology; image processing with soft computing; intelligent control; machine learning; fuzzy logic in data analytics and data mining; evolutionary computing; chaotic systems; soft computing in business, economics and finance; fuzzy logic and soft computing in the earth sciences; fuzzy logic and soft computing in engineering; soft computing in medicine, biomedical engineering and the pharmaceutical sciences; and probabilistic and statistical reasoning in the social and educational sciences. The book covers new ideas from theoretical and practical perspectives in economics, business, industry, education, medicine, the earth sciences and other fields. In addition to promoting the development and application of soft computing methods in various real-life fields, it offers a useful guide for academics, practitioners, and graduates in fuzzy logic and soft computing fields.

Fuzzy systems and data mining are indispensible aspects of the computer systems and algorithms on which the world has come to depend. This book presents papers from FSDM 2021, the 7th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining. The conference, originally due to take place in Seoul, South Korea, was held online on 26-29 October 2021, due to ongoing restrictions connected with the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual FSDM conference provides a platform for knowledge exchange between international experts, researchers, academics and delegates from industry. This year, the committee received 266 submissions, and this book contains 52 papers, including keynotes and invited presentations, oral and poster contributions. The papers cover four main areas: 1) fuzzy theory, algorithms and systems – including topics like stability; 2) fuzzy applications – which are widely used and cover various types of processing as well as hardware and architecture for big data and time series; 3) the interdisciplinary field of fuzzy logic and data mining; and 4) data mining itself. The topic most frequently addressed this year is fuzzy systems. The book offers an overview of research and developments in fuzzy logic and data mining, and will be of interest to all those working in the field of data science.

The analysis and control of complex systems have been the main motivation for the emergence of fuzzy set theory since its inception. It is also a major research field where many applications, especially industrial ones, have made fuzzy logic famous. This unique handbook is devoted to an extensive, organized, and up-to-date presentation of fuzzy systems engineering methods. The book includes detailed material and extensive bibliographies, written by leading experts in the field, on topics such as: Use of fuzzy logic in various control systems. Fuzzy rule-based modeling and its universal approximation properties. Learning and tuning techniques for fuzzy models, using neural networks and genetic algorithms. Fuzzy control methods, including issues such as stability analysis and design techniques, as well as the relationship with traditional linear control. Fuzzy sets relation to the study of chaotic systems, and the fuzzy extension of set-valued approaches to systems modeling through the use of differential inclusions. Fuzzy Systems: Modeling and Control is part of The Handbooks of Fuzzy Sets Series. The series provides a complete picture of contemporary fuzzy set theory and its applications. This volume is a key reference for systems engineers and scientists seeking a guide to the vast amount of literature in fuzzy logic modeling and control.

Industrial development is essential to improvement of the standard of living in all countries. People's health and the environment can be affected, directly or indirectly by routine waste discharges or by accidents. A series of recent major industrial accidents and the effect of pollution highlighted, once again, the need for better management of routine and accidental risks. Moreover, the existence of natural hazards complicate even more the situation in any given region. In the past effort to cope with these risks, if made at all, have been largely on a plant by plant basis; some plants are well equipped to manage environmental and health hazards, while others are not. Managing the hazards of modern technological systems has become a key activity in highly industrialised countries. Decision makers are often confronted with complex issues concerning economic and social development, industrialisation and associated infrastructure needs, population and land use planning. Such issues have to be addressed in such a way that ensures that public health will not be disrupted or substantially degraded. Due to the increasing complexity of technological systems and the higher geographical density of punctual hazard sources, new methodologies and a novel approach to these problems are challenging risk managers and regional planers. Risks from these new complex technological systems are inherently different form those addressed by the risk managers for decades ago.
