Frontiers of Fluid Mechanics documents the proceedings of the Beijing International Conference on Fluid Mechanics, held in Beijing, People's Republic of China, 1-4 July 1987. The aims of the conference were to provide a forum for a cross-sectional review of the state-of-the-art and new advances in various branches of fluid mechanics, and to promote the exchange of ideas by experts from different parts of the world. The contributions made by researchers at the conference are organized into 18 parts. Part 1 presents invited lectures covering topics such as separated flow, porous flow, and turbulence modeling. Part 2 contains papers dealing with turbulence. Parts 3, 4, and 5 include studies on flow stability and transition, transonic flow, and boundary layer flows and shock waves, respectively. Part 6 is devoted to aerodynamics and gas dynamics. Part 7 examines water waves while Part 8 is devoted to hydrodynamics and hydraulics. The papers in Part 9 examine bubbles and drops. Part 10 deals with experiments involving vortices, jets, wakes, and cavities. Part 11 contains studies on geophysical and astrophysical fluid mechanics. Parts 12 and 13 investigate two-phase flow and flow through porous media, and non-Newtonian flow, respectively. Part 14 takes up magneto-hydrodynamics and physic-chemical flow. Part 15 covers biofluid mechanics. Part 16 contains papers on industrial and environmental fluid mechanics while Part 17 deals with heat transfer. Part 18 contains papers that were received after the conference.

In the last few years there has been a revival of interest in the old idea that spacetime may have more than four dimensions, all but four having been curled up into a small circumference. In this view the various particles and interactions we see at ordinary energies arise from a simple, perhaps purely geometrical, theory in higher dimensions. This idea has profound implications for elementary particle physics and cosmology, and raises challenging problems of mathematics. These matters were the topic of the Second Jerusalem Winter School of Theoretical Physics.

The Second European Turbulence Conference was held at the Technische Univer sitat Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany, from August 30th to September 2nd 1988 under the auspices of the European Mechanics Committee. It was primar ily devoted to fundamental aspects of turbulence, and aimed at bringing together engineers, physicists, and mathematicians. The scientific committee - serving also as Sub-committee of the European Turbulence Conference - consisted of the following members: G. Comte-Bellot (Lyon), H.-H. Fernholz and H.E. Fiedler (both from Berlin) as co-chairmen of the conference, U. Frisch (Nice), J.C.R. Hunt (Cambridge), E. Krause (Aachen), M. Landahl (Stockholm), A.M. Obukhov (Moscow), and G. Ooms (Amsterdam). The conference programme comprised 6 invited lectures and 94 contributions, presented either orally or at poster sessions. There were 165 participants from 18 countries. All papers published in these conference proceedings were, with the exception of the invited ones, again refereed by the members of the scientific committee. The main research topics discussed at this meeting were stability and gener ation of turbulence, effects of rotation, stratification and buoyancy forces, novel instrumentation, manipulation and control, boundary layers with separation and reattachment, computer simulation, turbulent diffusion, image analysis and flow visualization, vorticity dynamics and turbulence, and large-scale structures. We have taken the liberty of regrouping some papers following the submitted final versions for this volume. Authors may therefore find their paper under a different heading from that in the conference programme.

By definition Biomechanics is the application of engineering methods to study the mechanical aspects of living beings. Mostly the life scientists have the questions but lack of the specialized methods. The engineers on the other hand can handle very specialized equipment and methods, but lack in the biological thinking. If both sides are able to adapt to each other, Biomechanics is a classical field of interdis ciplinary cooperation. In the beginning, most biomechanical research was done in the field of orthopaedics. But other areas like cardiovascular research, dentistry, sports and many others gain increasing importance. This situation is clearly reflected in this book, which contains a selected number of papers which were presented at the Fifth Meeting of the European Society of Biomechanics, held in September 1986 in Berlin. Meanwhile these meetings have become a well accepted forum and a place of interdis ciplinary discussion for scientists in Biomechanics on the one side and surgeons and other peoples interested in biome chanical solutions on the other. It is the third time that the proceedings are published as a book and the editors are sure that this volume will help to establish this series "Developement in Biomechanics" as a valuable tool for all people involved in Biomechanics. The Fifth Meeting of the ESB also marks the tenth anniversary in the short history of the European Society of Biomechanics.
