The complex environmental problems associated with agro-industries urgently need effective solutions based upon scientific information and engineering experience, as so the related issues of pollutant run-off from agriculture and sewage treatment in rural areas. The series of international symposia on Waste Management Problems in Agro-industries has become a firmly established regular IWA event, and these latest selected proceedings again make a major contribution to this task. Of the many high-quality contributions, the Programme Committee could only accommodate 44 papers. Topics covered include: diffuse pollution; agricultural and animal wastes; aerobic and anaerobic processes; nutrient removal; physicochemical processes; and wastes from the textile and food and beverage industries. They will certainly provide the necessary scientific background for the discussion of the multitude of problems involved in the appropriate management of wastes from agro-industries and agricultural activities.

Agro-industries play a major role in the world's economy and at the same time are major contributors to the worldwide industrial pollution problem. With the tremendous pace of technological development substantial research is devoted to coping with wastes of ever increasing complexity generated by agro-industries. This symposium was a pioneering effort to provide a dynamic and comprehensive approach to appropriate waste management and encourage further efforts. Subjects discussed covered a significant group of industrial activities based on agricultural means or products, such as textile, pulp and paper, leather, food, sugar, edible oil, beverage and animal farming. Major issues addressed include waste characterization and categorization, problems of effluent quality management, control and treatment technologies, pretreatment, problems in hot and cold climates, energy recovery and reuse systems and sludge utilization and disposal.

The International Water Association's 2nd World Water Congress held in Berlin in October 2001 was, like its predecessor, a resounding and well attended success. At the centre of its programme were over three hundred oral presentations addressing the drinking water, sanitation, stormwater and environmental needs of communities worldwide. From the large number of oral presentations, after full peer review, 49 papers dealing with aspects of integrated water resources management have been selected for this issue. Topics include: modelling and decision support systems; water efficiency; leadership and public participation; assessment methodologies; urban drainage; diffuse pollution; rehabilitation of sewer systems; water reuse; sustainable sanitation; and appropriate technologies for developing countries. With some of the world's leading experts as authors, highlighting research results and their practical applications, these proceedings are an essential compilation of the latest advances relating to integrated water resources management, from the scientific basis of sustainable sanitation through to developments in policy support and utility management. The project of establishing a scientific basis for discussing and solving emerging environmental problems in agro-industries has flourishing one over the last two decades. The term agro industries defines a common scientific framework for a significant group of industrial activities based on agricultural means and products, covering a number of major industries such as textiles, pulp and paper, leather, food, sugar, edible oil, beverage, etc. The symposium in Amsterdam provided an effective forum for discussion of the present and future problems, recent experiences and advances in this significant field of environmental management, giving rise to high-quality papers that were fully peer reviewed, with 32 finally being selected for this issue. The concept of waste management has greatly improved over the last twenty years, with outstanding achievements in the understanding of wastewater characteristics and interpretation of biological and physico-chemical processes used for treatment and disposal. There have also been major innovations in waste management directing the focus towards issues like persistent organic pollutants (POPS), resources recovery and reuse, waste minimization, treatment of segregated waste streams, etc. The papers selected for this issue provide genuine insight into current best practice and also set out a basis for significant collaborative research efforts for agro-industries waste management.
