Excerpt from Proceedings of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Illinois I am pleased to. Report that our inter-jurisdictional relations remain most cordial and harmonious. While a ripple of dissatisfaction has now and then appeared on the usually placid surface of diplomatic intercourse, yet in each case 'a spirit Of compromise has prevailed which resulted in the amicable adjustment of all controversies. The fact that during the past year' the Grand Master has not found it necessary to exercise any of the disciplinary powers incident to his office in the settlement of troubles between lodges in this jurisdiction is the best evidence that unusual good feeling and harmony prevail. The official visits ofthe District Deputy Grand Masters to the lodges in their respective jurisdictions have been a valuable means for disseminating knowledge of masonic law and usage and have resulted in a closer observance of the provisions of the Blue Book, thus materially reducing the chances for mistakes and misunderstandings. That the provision of the law, by which the expense of official visits by the District Deputy Grand Masters has been paid by the Grand Lodge, is a wise one, is proven by the fact that of the 835 lodges in this jurisdiction reports are on file in this office from 819 leaving only 16 from which no reports have been received. Excerpt from Proceedings of the Grand Lodge of the State of Illinois: Ancient Free and Accepted Masons Almighty God, the giver of every good and perfect gift, we would not enter upon any undertaking without invoking Thy aid. Thou art acquainted with us and knowest our needs. Grant us, we pray Thee, Thy presence, that we may transact the business of this Grand Lodge to Thy pleasure and glory. We thank Thee that Thou hast permitted us to come together in this meeting, and to look into each other's faces. We pray that Thou wilt forgive us where we have displeased Thee, and that Thou wilt restore unto us the joy of Thy salvation. We pray Thee to re member those of our brethren that are today in the service of our country - those of our brethren who, in response to the call of our na tion, cheerfully and gladly put on the blue and rallied beneath the flag we love so well. We pray Thee that Thou wilt be very near, and very precious to those who may be sick; comfort and console them by Thy presence. We pray that Thou wilt remember in great tender ness, those who have been called to mourn the loss of their sons and fathers, either in the battle with bullets or with fever. We pray expressly that Thou wilt bless the families from whom has been taken some member of our fraternity. Temper the wind, we pray Thee, to the shorn lamb. Guide us in all our deliberations. Make us to be bet ter fathers, better sons, and better husbands, because of the lessons we have learned in this Institution. May each of us be duly and truly prepared and be worthy and well qualified for our entrance into that place, that temple, that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. And to Thee we will ascribe all the praise, honor, and glory. Amen. The Grand Secretary announced that the Committee on Credentials 'had informed him that representatives were present from a constitutional number of lodges, and asked for the committee further time to complete its report, which was granted. Excerpt from Proceedings of the Grand Lodge of the State of Illinois, Free and Accepted Masons: Fifty-First Grand Annual Communication, Held at Chicago, October 7, 8 and 9, 1890 We adore Thee, Infinite Creator, and our thought aspires to Thee as the Grand Master of the Universe in whom we all live, move and have our being. We thank Thee for the renewed opportunity of thus meeting together as brethren. We thank Thee for the kind providence which has attended our journey in life hitherto. We thank Thee, Infinite and adorable God, for the friends to sympathize with us, Speaking words of cheer and comfort to us in the pilgrimage of our existence. We thank Thee, O God, that we may now meet together and gain encouragement and inspiration from one another to think and do all that is right. We meet in the interest of brotherly love, re lief and truth; and we meet, Infinite God, to be improved in fortitude, pru dence, temperance and justice. We meet to have exalted ideas of Thee, the Infinite Creator and preserver of us all. We ask, therefore, Thy blessing upon us, as we are here assembled, that we may gain inspirations from the occasion, having a consciousness that we are advancing in all the grand qualities of a noble and enlightened manhood, ready to do good to our fellow men, ready to help the fallen, and cheer the fainting, disconsolate and the' despairing. We pray Thee that we may grow in these qualities, and present to the world the assurance that this, our order, is for good; that this, our order, contributes to ennoblement and truth and virtue and good citizenship. We pray for Thy blessing to rest upon us in all the deliberations that shall come before us and in which we shall be called to participate, that they may redound to Thy honor, and to Thy praise, and unto Thy name shall be an aspiration of unceasing praise. Amen. The Grand Secretary announced that the Committee on Credentials had informed him that a constitutional number of lodges were represented, and asked for the committee further time to complete their report, which was granted. Excerpt from Proceedings of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Illinois, 1904 Grant unto us, 0 God, perception and wise insight that the difficulties of our work may disappear before our earnest efforts to master them. In all that we may accomplish here, teach us to see Thy Majesty which works so silently and yet so grandly, in all spheres and in all times. May the example of the illustrious brethren of our Order be not lost upon us, but serve as additional incentives to the emulation of all that has gained for them our approval. Foster and preserve in us the qualities that shall en dear us to all our brethren, and give us the wise perception to moderate and remove those which might prevent our aim. Supreme Architect of the Universe! In whatever way Thy Wisdom can find to bless our work, in Thy bountiful mercy to all humanity, grant unto us Thy grace and protection, strengthening and success. Excerpt from Proceedings of the Grand Lodge of the State of Illinois, Free and Accepted Masons: Fifty-Fifth Grand Annual Communication, Held at Chicago, October 2, 3, and 4, 1894 Ev'n scenes that strike with terrible surprise, Still prove a God, just, merciful, and wise. Sad wintery blasts, that strip the autumn, bring The milder beauties of a flowery spring. The distress in financial and industrial affairs has not in any way stayed the progress of Masonry throughout our Grand Jurisdiction. Indeed, it has been a year of unusual interest and activity - a year of success in cementing more strongly the ties of brotherly love and affection, in developing a broader view Of the beautiful teachings and purifying influences of our noble Fraternity. We know the ills and hurts of life are caused by the mistakes of men, and can only be temporary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
