This book describes contemporary efforts to develop nano-molecular systems for future molecular electronics in which single molecules act as the basic elements in electrical circuits. While describing frontier research, it also gives a comprehensive introduction and discusses the related work being pursued worldwide. The book is composed of three parts. The first part describes the synthesis of novel molecules for molecular nano-systems. The second part deals mainly with nano-molecular systems on solid surfaces and the evaluation of the system with SPM. The third part reviews the theory required as a background for molecular electronics.

Principles of Electron Optic: Volume Three: Wave Optics, discusses this essential topic in microscopy to help readers understand the propagation of electrons from the source to the specimen, and through the latter (and from it) to the image plane of the instrument. In addition, it also explains interference phenomena, notably holography, and informal coherence theory. This third volume accompanies volumes one and two that cover new content on holography and interference, improved and new modes of image formation, aberration corrected imaging, simulation, and measurement, 3D-reconstruction, and more. The study of such beams forms the subject of electron optics, which divides naturally into geometrical optics where effects due to wavelength are neglected, with wave optics considered. - Includes authoritative coverage of the fundamental theory behind electron beams - Describes the interaction of electrons with solids and the information that can be obtained from electron-beam techniques - Addresses recent, relevant research topics, including new content on holography and interference, new modes of image formation, 3D reconstruction and aberration corrected imaging, simulation and measurement

We are often told that quantum phenomena demand radical revisions of our scientific world view and that no physical theory describing well defined objects, such as particles described by their positions, evolving in a well defined way, let alone deterministically, can account for such phenomena. The great majority of physicists continue to subscribe to this view, despite the fact that just such a deterministic theory, accounting for all of the phe nomena of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, was proposed by David Bohm more than four decades ago and has arguably been around almost since the inception of quantum mechanics itself. Our purpose in asking colleagues to write the essays for this volume has not been to produce a Festschrift in honor of David Bohm (worthy an undertaking as that would have been) or to gather together a collection of papers simply stating uncritically Bohm's views on quantum mechanics. The central theme around which the essays in this volume are arranged is David Bohm's version of quantum mechanics. It has by now become fairly standard practice to refer to his theory as Bohmian mechanics and to the larger conceptual framework within which this is located as the causal quantum theory program. While it is true that one can have reservations about the appropriateness of these specific labels, both do elicit distinc tive images characteristic of the key concepts of these approaches and such terminology does serve effectively to contrast this class of theories with more standard formulations of quantum theory.

"The motion of a particle undergoing quantum tunneling has long been an open and debated problem in several aspects. One of the most discussed is the determination of the time spent in such processes, but many other features deserve consideration. In this volume, both theoretical and experimental aspects, such as quantum measurement, optical analogy, experimental tests, solid state devices and time scale for anomalies (quantum Zeno effect and superluminal evanescence), are explored."--Publisher's website

Quantum coherence plays a crucial role in various forms of matter. The thriving field of quantum information as well as unconventional approaches to using mesoscopic systems in future optoelectronic devices provide the exciting background for this set of lectures. The lectures originate from the Schladming Winter Schools and are edited to address a broad readership ranging from the graduate student up to the senior scientist.
