Despite the growing interest in Real-Time Database Systems, there is no single book that acts as a reference to academics, professionals, and practitioners who wish to understand the issues involved in the design and development of RTDBS. Real-Time Database Systems: Issues and Applications fulfills this need. This book presents the spectrum of issues that may arise in various real-time database applications, the available solutions and technologies that may be used to address these issues, and the open problems that need to be tackled in the future. With rapid advances in this area, several concepts have been proposed without a widely accepted consensus on their definitions and implications. To address this need, the first chapter is an introduction to the key RTDBS concepts and definitions, which is followed by a survey of the state of the art in RTDBS research and practice. The remainder of the book consists of four sections: models and paradigms, applications and benchmarks, scheduling and concurrency control, and experimental systems. The chapters in each section are contributed by experts in the respective areas. Real-Time Database Systems: Issues and Applications is primarily intended for practicing engineers and researchers working in the growing area of real-time database systems. For practitioners, the book will provide a much needed bridge for technology transfer and continued education. For researchers, this book will provide a comprehensive reference for well-established results. This book can also be used in a senior or graduate level course on real-time systems, real-time database systems, and database systems or closely related courses.

This volume contains the complete set of tutorial papers presented at the 16th IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing) Working Group 7.3 International Symposium on Computer Performance Modelling, Measurement and Evaluation, and a number of tutorial papers presented at the 1993 ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Special Interest Group METRICS Conference on Measurement and Modeling of Computer Systems. The principal goal of the volume is to present an overview of recent results in the field of modeling and performance evaluation of computer and communication systems. The wide diversity of applications and methodologies included in the tutorials attests to the breadth and richness of current research in the area of performance modeling. The tutorials may serve to introduce a reader to an unfamiliar research area, to unify material already known, or simply to illustrate the diversity of research in the field. The extensive bibliographies guide readers to additional sources for further reading.

Computer networks, which use wireless data connection between network nodes, are called wireless networks. Wireless telecommunication is achieved by radio communication. The different types of wireless networks are wireless personal area networks, wireless local area networks, wireless ad hoc networks, wireless metropolitan area networks, cellular networks, etc. Wireless communication is used in terrestrial microwave, communications satellites, cellular and PCS systems, and free-space optical communication, besides many others. The topics included in this book on wireless networks are of the utmost significance and bound to provide incredible insights to readers. While understanding the long-term perspectives of the topics, it makes an effort in highlighting their impact as a modern tool for the growth of the discipline. In this textbook, constant effort has been made to make the understanding of the difficult concepts of wireless networks as easy and informative as possible, for the readers.

The technical program of the Conference consisted of technical sessions that covered all-important aspects of control, informa tion processing/communications, and computers. In particular, there were numerous technical sessions covering all-important aspects of control, such as control theory, control applications, estima tion, identification, adaptive systems, linear systems, stability, cybernetics, computational methods, and simulation. The program also included many sessions on information processing/communicati ons, such as information theory, coding, signal analysis, signal processing, communication theory, satellite communications, pat tern recognition and image processing. Moreover, there were sever al sessions on computers, in particular on computer systems, com puter communication networks, and automata. Finally, the technical program included numerous sessions on important applications of systems technology, such as power, energy modeling and planning, earth resources, transportation, economics and management, and physiological systems. In view of the broad scope of the Conference technical program and the extensive coverage of many important aspects of systems theory and applications by internationally known researchers, we hope that this collection of papers will be a useful supplement to the published literature and textbooks used for research and teaching. For the success of the Conference we are indebted to a great many people and institutions, primarily to the authors of the papers, without whom the conference would not have existed, and this book would not have materialized. We are particularly indebted to the great majority of them who paid some or all of their own expenses.

This unique book dicusses the latest research, innovative ideas, challenges and computational intelligence (CI) solutions in sustainable computing. It presents novel, in-depth fundamental research on achieving a sustainable lifestyle for society, either from a methodological or from an application perspective. Sustainable computing has expanded to become a significant research area covering the fields of computer science and engineering, electrical engineering and other engineering disciplines, and there has been an increase in the amount of literature on aspects sustainable computing such as energy efficiency and natural resources conservation that emphasizes the role of ICT (information and communications technology) in achieving system design and operation objectives. The energy impact/design of more efficient IT infrastructures is a key challenge in realizing new computing paradigms. The book explores the uses of computational intelligence (CI) techniques for intelligent decision support that can be exploited to create effectual computing systems, and addresses sustainability problems in computing and information processing environments and technologies at the different levels of CI paradigms. An excellent guide to surveying the state of the art in computational intelligence applied to challenging real-world problems in sustainable computing, it is intended for scientists, practitioners, researchers and academicians dealing with the new challenges and advances in area.

First established in August 1988, the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) has shaped the landscape of modern transaction processing and database benchmarks over two decades. Now, the world is in the midst of an extraordinary information explosion led by rapid growth in the use of the Internet and connected devices. Both user-generated data and enterprise data levels continue to grow ex- nentially. With substantial technological breakthroughs, Moore's law will continue for at least a decade, and the data storage capacities and data transfer speeds will continue to increase exponentially. These have challenged industry experts and researchers to develop innovative techniques to evaluate and benchmark both hardware and software technologies. As a result, the TPC held its First Conference on Performance Evaluation and Benchmarking (TPCTC 2009) on August 24 in Lyon, France in conjunction with the 35th International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB 2009). TPCTC 2009 provided industry experts and researchers with a forum to present and debate novel ideas and methodologies in performance evaluation, measurement and characteri- tion for 2010 and beyond. This book contains the proceedings of this conference, including 16 papers and keynote papers from Michael Stonebraker and Karl Huppler.
