Physiatrists design plans that not only treat chronic pain, but also the whole patient who lives with the pain. Causes of chronic pain can include arthritis, work injuries, failed back surgery, foot and ankle injuries, knee and hip injuries, neck, shoulder, and back injuries, nerve (neuropathic) pain, etc. This issue will focus on everything from assessment, to various treatment options (medications and injections), as well as rehab.

Many in the research and clinical communities are becoming increasingly aware of the interactions between sleep disorders and chronic pain syndromes. There are a number of obstacles on the path to better patient care, and there is considerable room for improvement in the way knowledge is shared between professionals in the sleep and pain communities. This book serves as the first step toward enhancing communication between the sleep and pain communities with the intent of improving patient care.

"This book is a comprehensive, very specific, clinical guide for health care providers..."--Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing "This well-written and well-organized book is a much needed 'middle ground' resource between oversimplified introductions to pain management and a thick textbook."--Clinical Nurse Specialist "The Compact Clinical Guide to Acute Pain Management provides an excellent overview of the processof pain management for adult patients in any setting."--Critical Care Nurse This book provides much-needed guidelines that are presented in an easy-to-use, systematic format for quick access to core concepts on acute pain management. It is designed to help busy practitioners accurately assess pain in a variety of patient populations, and select patient-appropriate medications and interventions to achieve optimal pain management for adult patients. Intended for use in primary care, internal medicine, and acute- and long-term care settings, this book covers the topics of acute pain assessment, both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment options, current information from national guidelines, along with regional anesthesia techniques, patient-controlled analgesia, and epidural pain management. Key Features: Offers important new perspective on combination use of pain scales to accurately predict individual pain management needs for more customized and effective management Delivers information on how to treat acute pain in hospitalized patients who also suffer from chronic pain and substance abuse Offers new information on opioid polymorphisms and their surprising effect on pain medication effectiveness Includes a special chapter on managing pain in difficult-to-treat patient populations This is an essential reference for primary care providers in clinics, hospitals, specialty care, and critical care to assess pain in general populations and provide tips for performing pain assessment on patients with acute pain.

Chronic back pain has been and continues to be a major cause of distress (both to people with persistent pain and their significant others), disability, work loss, and a huge cost to society. Moreover, with the aging population, it is becoming even more prevalent and as a consequence is having an escalating impact upon the healthcare systems and society as a whole worldwide. A significant issue concerns understanding why, although the majority of people with acute back symptoms recover in a reasonable time, a significant minority evolve into patients with chronic pain and prolonged pain-related disability. Understanding the variables that contribute to chronicity could serve as a basis for early intervention to prevent the downward spiral. In the past 15 years, psychological and psychobiological mechanisms have been identified as important risk factors in back pain, leading to the development of early screending methods (Yellow Flag diagnostics) and new psychosocial interventions. These work by closely targeting treatment modalities to patients' needs. However, many aspects of how acute pain becomes chronic pain remain unexplained. Recent neurobiological work investigating genetic, neurophysiological, and biomechanical processes has uncovererd important mechanisms involved in chronic and acute back pain. From Acute to Chronic Back Pain examines the risk factors and mechanisms involved in the transition from acute to chronic back pain. It integrates genetic, biomechnanical neurobiological, psychophysiological, psychosocial, and socieconomic risk factors. Moreover, the text examines advances in treatment approaches based on evidence from published studies-ranging from prevention of disability to pharmacological, psychological, and rehabilitative strategies and methods. Broad in scope, and with contributions from leading authorities in their respective fields, this book is a valuable and comprehensive work for the many specialities involved with back pain - including those in the fields of clinical and health psychology, physiology, epidemiology, and pain.

When it comes to mechanisms, diagnosis, and management of acute and chronic orofacial pain, no book is more comprehensive than Orofacial Pain. With 54 leading pain specialists documenting the latest research advances and treatments, this book is the new standard resource for understanding, assessing, and managing all aspects of orofacial pain. Orofacial Pain’s 24 chapters address the epidemiologic, socioeconomic, and psychological aspects of orofacial pain conditions as well as the mechanisms underlying orofacial pain revealed in recent studies in humans and animals. Most other books on this topic focus on just one or two aspects of orofacial pain—and nearly all with only dental students or clinicians in mind. Orofacial Pain provides the most up-to-date, complete, and integrated coverage of advances in research and new evidence. It is must reading not only for dental clinicians but also for pain scientists and specialists, neurologists, and other clinicians.
