The great inaccuracy in the timekeeping of such watches, though amended as much as possible by the insertion of the fusee, created many contrivances of escapements with the principal view of giving more extension to the vibrations, and by doing so, making them more independent of the variable effect of the moving force and less liable to be disturbed by the external motion which a portable timekeeper is exposed to.
