Excerpt from Printing in Relation to Graphic Art It is not the purpose of this book to try to establish a claim for printing that it is an art. It is hoped that it may show that the princi ples, of art may be applied to printing, and that such application may lead to improvement in some essentials of printing. Thanks are due to several experts in print ing who have read the proofs, and have given wise and acceptable counsel. I desire to acknowledge that aid has been freely sought from books upon art, and that in some instances forms of expression have been adopted from them. No originality is claimed for the allusions to art, nor for art terms and formulas employed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Progress in Printing and the Graphic Arts During the Victorian Era I venture to protest against this view; and in the following pages hope to show that printing is by no means in a state of decadence. On the contrary, I will try to point out that very good printing is done. My Con tention is, in fact, that better printing has been done during the last sixty years - in each of the three principal branches of the business: job, news. And book printing - zthan was ever done before. To establish this it will only be necessary, I think, to contrast the workmanship, the appliances, the materials, of 1897 with those of 1837. Excerpt from Design and Color in Printing The man who has the eye and intellect will invent beautiful propor tions, and can not help it; but he can not tell us how'to do it. There are one or two general laws that can be told; but they are of no use, indeed, except as preventatives of gross mistakes. John Ruskin. Excerpt from Applied Design for Printers: A Handbook of the Principles of Arrangement, With Brief Comment on the Periods of Design Which Have Most Strongly Influenced Printing Due credit must be paid to Mr. Ernest Allen Batch elder, who first devoted his pen and brush directly to the printer's problem in design, and who in turn gives honor to the influence of Mr. Denman Ross. Neither has expressed a method but has graphically analyzed the attitude of mankind during successive epochs toward those matters which deal with beauty. It is to be hoped that this little book may serve as a simple guide and as a stimulant toward an extended study of the larger attributes of printing which are not concerned with utility alone. H. L. Excerpt from Sources of Information in the American Graphic Arts Just as the doctor or lawyer must read, observe and listen to keep up with the developments in his profession, so the graphic arts stu dent, teacher, craftsman, or consumer must to follow the changes in the graphic arts field adequately. Since processes and equipment are continually changing and improving, it is imperative that sources of information pertinent both to every day questions and to future problems be readily available to persons affected by these changes. Each month at the Carnegie Institute of Technology printing department we receive requests for information from persons in all phases of the graphic arts. This leads us to the conclusion that the tre mendons mass of detail which constitutes graphic arts knowledge either is confusing or is difficult to retain. Therefore, rather than to expect retention of details and yet to clarify confusing points, what is needed is to incorporate source locations under one cover so that these sources may be readily investigated by anyone in the graphic arts. It is difficult enough to arouse and maintain professional interest without adding the obstacle of hidden source materials.
