Excerpt from Principles of Natural Theology It follows from what we have said that in the Scholastic philosophy Natural Theology is no um essential adjunct, no mere afterthought, but a substantive and vital part of the system, without which it would be radically incomplete. It claims to establish from assured first principles the exist ence of'a Supreme Being, distinct from the finite and mutable things of experience. It maintains, further, that though the limitations of the human intellect render all our knowledge of Him inade quate, we are not wholly ignorant of His nature. There are certain attributes which can be affirmed of Him with certainty, though they are His in a manner more 'perfect than any which we can imagine. Above all, He is' intelligent and free, and therefore possessed of personality. In Him it finds the source and origin of all finite beings, and the final cause in view of which such beings exist. Excerpt from Manual of Natural Theology Modern views of Evolution of necessity modify the method of dealing with the evidences of The ism. But the new scientific doctrine, so far as it can be said to have established itself in the creed of Naturalists of highest repute, has the effect, I am persuaded, to fortify rather than to weaken the argument of design. Natural Theology is that branch of philosophy which investigates what human reason unaided by revelation can tell us concerning God. The end at which it aims is to demonstrate the existence of God, to establish the principal divine attributes, to vindicate God’s relation to the world as that of the Creator to the creature, and, finally, to throw what light it can on the action of divine providence in regard of man and on the problem of evil.

Excerpt from Natural Theology In the celebrated Catholic controversy about the manner of Divine foreknowledge of and concurrence in human actions, it has been my endeavour to give a good account of the opposite opinions and of my own position. I have purposely avoided quotations, as often as I could conveniently without doing harm to the cause of truth, in order to eliminate any element of prejudice or party strife.
