Excerpt from Principles and Method in the Study of English Literature These chapters are written primarily from a teacher's point of view. I have here attempted to state the logical and psychological principles that underlie the study of English Literature, and to illustrate methods of teaching that follow naturally from them. The essay is written with special reference to the mental growth and requirements of pupils in secondary schools; but in so far as the methods indicated are logically based upon the fundamental nature of the subject-matter taught, they are capable of being applied, in their essence, to the teaching of English Literature at all stages: I therefore venture to hope that the essay may be of interest to teachers of every grade. No attempt has been made to deal with the study of English as a whole: principles and method are described in their application only to the reading of authors. From an immediately practical standpoint, my chief aim has been to show how English Literature, as it appears in the works of our best writers, may be effectively studied and rightly appreciated. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from How to Study English Literature: With an Appendix on Fine Passages in Prose and Poetry More than helter-skelter racing about a field is trained athleticism. To be an athlete you must introduce an intelligent plan into your physical recreations, and in like manner, to be a student you must foster a native bent to investigation and reflection by systematic methods. The present contribution keeps such princi ples steadily in view, and attempts to follow them into their specific bearings, to a closer grapple with literary problems as they confront the earnest reader, or as they actually shape themselves in the classroom or the literary club.
