Excerpt from Primary Lessons in Human Physiology and Hygiene for Schools This book is intended for the use of children who are just beginning to learn something about the care of their bodies and the laws of health. In order to attract and hold the young pupil's attention, the lessons are presented in a variety of forms, and care has been taken to avoid, as far as possible, the didactic methods so common in text-books on this subject. It is believed that the constant alternation of reading lesson, picture page, oral exercise, story, memory lesson, written exercise, and review will be both pleasing to the learner and acceptable to the teacher. Such facts only are presented as can be readily comprehended by children - such facts only as are of immediate and practical importance to them. In the treatment of these facts, care has been taken to avoid whatever might unduly encourage or cultivate the sense of self-consciousness on the part of the learner - a sense which should not be acquired at too early an age. Hence, very little is said about the structure of "our wonderful bodies,'' and no anatomical pictures have been admitted. Not illustrated. 1860 edition. Excerpt: ... LESSON SECOND. The Human Body. What kinds of substance are found in the human body? Solids and fluids. What is a solid? That is called a solid, the small parts of which adhere together so closely and firmly, that they do not separate by their own weight. A stone, a piece of wood, a lump of clay, a leaf, Sec, are solids. What is a fluid? That is called a fluid, the parts of which adhere together so feebly as to separate readily by their own weight, when not confined in a vessel. The parts of a fluid move easily among themselves, and readily change places, in any direction, with each other. Water, milk, blood, and all kinds of liquor, are fluids. Will you name some of the solids and some of the fluids of the body? Bones, muscles, and nerves, are solids. Blood, tears, and gall, are fluids. Which is the hardest solid in the body 1 Bone. Where are the bones in man placed? Under the skin and flesh of the body. Where are the bones of lobsters, oysters, clams, crabs, and other shell-fish, placed? On the outside of the body. Their bones are called shells, and serve to protect them from injury. Why are the bones of man not on the outside of the body? If he was covered with bone as an oyster is, he could have but little feeling or knowledge. Of what use are bones to man? They make his body stronger, and keep it upright. When a carpenter builds a house, he makfs and raises the frame first. Bones are the frame of the body. The flesh and skin are put on them as the carpenter puts boards, shingles, and plaster, on the houseframe. Are the bones of children hard t No; the bones of children are very soft, and easily bent; but they become harder and stiffer as life advances. The bones of old people are dry, hard, and brittle. Children are sometimes taught...

Excerpt from Primary Lessons in Human Physiology These lessons have been prepared as a guide to the study of the human body; and while, no doubt, the teacher who undertakes to teach the subject of this little book is fully competent to do so, yet the writer may be pardoned for giving expression to his views in regard to the true place of such a book. The writer would insist that the book be used only as a guide to such study and not the sole object to be studied. The human body itself should be the object studied. To supplement this, abundant materials from the bodies of lower animals should be used as a means to give true conceptions of the parts of the human body and its actions. If the teacher had sufficient time to give complete individual direction, a book would be of questionable use in this connection. If this or any other elementary text-book in physiology is used simply as a book to be learned and recited, the time spent on it is worse than wasted. The terms used in the description of the parts of the body and their actions can not have their proper meanings unless the real objects are seen. To attempt to cram children's minds with terms which to them stand either for nothing, or for vague conceptions wholly different from those for which the terms have been chosen, is doing the children a great injury. This procedure is not only harmful but unnecessary. Many of the parts of the body can be put under study and their operations carefully observed and analyzed. The lower animals can furnish the rest of the illustrations. A bone is a bone, the animal kingdom through. The same may be said for muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and all other parts that make up the body. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Primary Lessons in Human Physiology A word about the anatomical and other terms used in this little book. The author agrees with those who oppose the introduction of terms which can have no meaning to the pupils after fair attention is given to the subject. But it is certainly a mistake to avoid the use of words which are very convenient terms for things that have been actually seen. It is also a mistake to substitute terms not in common use for those that are the real names of the parts, on a supposition that it is easier for the children. The fact is that such a custom makes the work harder for the pupils. The terms used in this book, as the author knows by actual experience with children, are as easily learned as any terms when the thing named is seen and its use is understood. They are certainly fewer in number and as much within the powers of the pupils as are those in the other subjects in the school, num ber, language, and history, for example.
