My dissertation aims to inform strategies for the estimation of prevalence and burden of disease caused by neglected intestinal parasitic infections in the United States, with a view toward their control. The current burden of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) and intestinal protozoa (IP) infections in the US is unknown; consequentially, little existing surveillance and disease control framework exists to protect US residents. This group of infections is considered neglected due to lack of adequate surveillance. For example, despite documented historical and contemporary autochthonous transmission, the STH are not required by state law to be reported nor are they nationally notifiable, with the exception of mandated reporting for three species in Texas, as of September 2015. Without a tangible sense of the disease burden, little attention is paid to the prevention, diagnosis, and/or treatment of STH and IP in the US. I investigate the hypothesis that a significant burden of neglected intestinal parasitic infections persists in vulnerable communities throughout the US, and seek to identify and characterize the prevalence of intestinal parasites in a study at the local level. Our results from an epidemiological study in central Texas, as well as a species distribution modeling study of the STH Strongyloides stercoralis, suggest that STH represent a sufficient threat to US public health and therefore merit an organized public health response. Given that the US has a rudimentary or non-existent framework for addressing STH, I conduct a systematic review of global examples of intestinal parasite prevalence estimation, surveillance, and control programs to model solutions that can be adapted for the US context. My dissertation contributes to the characterization of a neglected public health problem, quantifying the burden of intestinal parasites locally and offering evidence-based solutions at the local, state, national, and health systems levels. The epidemiological insights we have gained about intestinal parasitic infections in the US suggest several public health, clinical, and policy strategies that may help to address the burden of disease, and, combined with additional historic and contemporary evidence call for a shift in the way we think about health equity and the provision of human rights in the US

Parasites are the organisms that live in a symbiotic relationship with other organisms. The organism on or inside which the parasite lives is known as the host. The size of a parasite can vary from microscopic to large enough to be seen with naked eyes. Parasites survive by feeding from the host. Giardia infection, Chagas disease and tapeworm are some of the examples of parasitic infections. The signs of parasitic infections depend on the parasite. Symptoms of giardiasis are diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramping and bloating, fatigue and weight loss. People having Chagas disease may not develop symptoms for few weeks. Its symptoms are low fever, skin rash, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, etc. The topics covered in this extensive book deal with the core subjects of parasitic infections. It provides significant information of this discipline to help develop a good understanding of the prevention and treatment of parasitic infections. A number of latest researches have been included to keep the readers up-to-date with the global concepts in this area of study.

This second edition of Bench aids for the diagnosis of intestinal parasites is intended both as a practical tool for the diagnosis of intestinal parasitic infections for laboratory and field workers and as a teaching aid for students and trainees. The plates are arranged on two sides: the recto with microphotographs for the identification of eggs larvae trophozoites cysts and oocysts occurring in faeces and the verso dedicated to the different copromicroscopical methods (procedures) and main staining techniques used in parasitology. Special attention has been devoted to all graphical and pictorial contents. The decision to include the outline of an Ascaris lumbricoides egg in its relative size next to each parasitic structure fulfils the intention of visualizing the actual dimensions that the eye needs to be looking for when examining the specimens with a microscope. For each image the size of the parasite and a short description are provided to assist in the microscopical identification. Two summary plates one for helminths and the other for protozoa are also included to provide a visual overview of the different presentations of parasitic elements. The bench aids have been produced in a weatherproof plastic-sealed format that is robust and easy to use at the bench. They are recommended for use by all health workers engaged in the routine diagnosis of intestinal parasitic infections.

More than 2000 million people worldwide are affected by schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections and 155 000 deaths are reported each year. These infections are diseases associated with poverty, and in school-age populations in developing countries, intestinal helminth infections rank first among the causes of all communicable and noncommunicable diseases. This book describes a cost-effective approach to the control of these infections, based on the use of periodic parasitological surveys of school population samples. It is intended as a guide for health education managers responsible for implementing community-based programmes.

The second revised edition of model prescribing information for some 37 essential drugs used for the prevention and treatment of protozoal and helminthic infections. The sections on malaria, African trypanosomiasis, cestode infections, schistosomiasis, and onchocerciasis have been extensively revised in the light of new developments in the treatment of these diseases. The book is organized according to diseases, moving from amoebiasis and giardiasis to intestinal, liver, and lung flukes. Each disease or group of diseases is first introduced with concise information about its causes, mode of transmission, clinical features, and geographical prevalence, followed by general advice on prevention and treatment. Prescribing information is then provided for first-choice and alternative therapeutic and prophylactic drugs. Information includes uses, dosage and administration, contraindications and precautions, use in pregnancy, adverse effects, drug interactions, and advice on storage. Wherever relevant, prescribing precautions to be followed when treating infections in AIDS patients are clearly indicated. Some rarer parasitic diseases, such as Babesia divergens infections and meningoencephalitis due to Acanthamoeba spp, which do not respond to chemotherapy, are nonetheless presented and discussed in order to help prescribers avoid ineffective medications.

Helminth infections are caused by parasitic worms (including tapeworms and roundworms). These diseases are associated with poverty, and in school-age populations in developing countries, intestinal helminth infections rank first among the causes of all communicable and noncommunicable diseases. This book is based on papers presented at an OECD conference, held in Bali, Indonesia in February 2000, which sought to review activities for the control of diseases due to soil-transmitted helminth infections in Indonesia and neighbouring countries.
