The information furnished by these mills lowed that about 85 percent of them cleaned the outer surface of at least >me of the bales consumed and that approximately one-half of all bales con Jmed received some surface cleaning before the cotton was placed in the pro assing machinery. It also indicated that picking or brushing or both were v far the most frequently used methods in the preprocessing cleaning of iles. Of the bales cleaned, nearly one-half'were reported to have been Leaned on all surfaces, and one-third on the heads and one or two sides.
