This Safety Report discusses the ways of preparing a fire hazard analysis for a nuclear power plant. A comprehensive fire hazard analysis determines the adequacy of the fire protection measures (e.g. administrative controls, operator actions and passive fire protection components) and the necessary fixed fire protection systems. The publication will be useful to designers of new plants as well as operators of existing plants when preparing or updating a fire hazard analysis.

Provides a detailed list of the issues, and some of the limitations, to be considered when evaluating the adequacy and effectiveness of the fire hazard analysis of a nuclear power plant. It further gives a broad description of the methodology to be used by operators in preparing a fire hazard analysis for their own plant.

This Safety Report provides information on good practices in conducting probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) for fires in land based nuclear power plants. It has been developed in response to the increasing attention being given to PSA worldwide and is intended to facilitate the implementation of the risk based approach to fire safety assessment for both new and operating nuclear power plants.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has developed quantitative methods, known as “Fire Dynamics Tools” (FDTs), for analyzing the impact of fire and fire protection systems in nuclear power plants (NPPs). These methods have been implemented in spreadsheets and taught at the NRC's quarterly regional inspector workshops. The FDTs were developed using state-of-the-art fire dynamics equations and correlations that were preprogrammed and locked into Microsoft Excel® spreadsheets. These FDTs enable inspectors to perform quick, easy, first- order calculations for potential fire scenarios using today's state-of-the-art principles of fire dynamics. Each FDTs spreadsheet also contains a list of the physical and thermal properties of the materials commonly encountered in NPPs.
