This book is directed towards post-graduates who have passed Part I of the examination for Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and are preparing for Part II. However, it is hoped that physicians at all stages of their careers will find some parts that interest them. Most of the material has appeared in the Hospital Update series, 'Preparation for MRCP', but this has been modified and expanded; many useful points arising from correspondence relating to the series have been included, and the authors would like to express their thanks to those who have written. It is not intended that this should be used as a work of reference, although there is detailed discussion of some subjects. Only the written part of the examination is dealt with in detail, but the introduction contains hints on tackling the clinical sections which the authors hope the candidates will find valuable. There is, however, no substitute for clinical practice under supervision. The questions in Vll PREFACE the written section of the examination require short answers so that marking may be easy and objective. This book contains questions similar to those that may be encountered in the examination, but the answers have been expanded as a basis for discussion. It is hoped that this will encourage the candidate to read around the subjects covered, and the authors recommend that the questions are used as a basis for group discussion, as answers other than those in the text may be considered.

"Structured in the same way as the MRCP part 2 written exam, the two volumes of this self-assessment book together contain over 270 questions based on clinical scenarios which address the more difficult aspects of the medical curriculum. Chapters are divided by clinical specialties. Volume 1 includes: cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology and metabolic medicine, gastroenterology, haematology, and infectious diseases. Volume 2 includes: neurology and ophthalmology, oncology and palliative care, psychiatry and clinical pharmacology, nephrology, respiratory medicine and rheumatology. The first section of each chapter contains a clinical scenario followed by a multiple-choice, 'best-of-five', question written in the style of the MRCP exam. The second section of each chapter contains the answer, a concise and clear explanation of the reasoning behind the given answer being correct, as well as a comprehensive tutorial on the subject matter which uses high-quality diagrams and tables to help readers absorb and retain information quickly and orderly. References for further reading are also then given for those interested in a broader review"--

Providing a clear explanation of the relevant medical science behind the individual medical specialties, Basic Science for Core Medical Training and the MRCP, is an indispensable part of a candidate's MRCP preparation. Directly linked to the Royal College exam, the book follows the same systems-based approach as the syllabus for accurate and effective revision. With full coverage of basic science for the medical specialities, the book features material on genetics, cellular, molecular and membrane biology, and biochemistry. Content is presented in an illustrated and easy-to-read format, ensuring that the basic science for each medical specialty is more approachable and accessible. A focus on how the basic sciences aid understanding of clinical practice is reinforced through key tables of differential diagnoses and pharmacology. Ten multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter consolidate learning and enable candidates to test their knowledge. The book also covers common examination errors and areas of misunderstanding to aid learning and help candidates avoid common pitfalls.
