Excerpt from Relationship of Stump Diameter to Diameter at Breast Height for Seven Tree Species in Arizona and New Mexico DS stump diameter, inside bark, in inches An examination of residuals indicated that this model was appropriate, but it also revealed that the squared residuals increased as a linear function of stump diameter. Because of this, the reciprocal of stump diameter was taken as the weight in the weighted least squares regression program used for the rest of the study. Analyses of covariance determined that data sets could be combined across National Forests for each species and that the data set for corkbark fir could be combined With that for Engelmann spruce. As a result, the data for all forests, except the Lincoln (because of the different stump height), were combined.
