Precommercial thinning of overstocked stands of balsam fir and black spruce is an essential component of the silviculture program in Newfoundland. Stemwood production rates per hectare and per tree for the 5 years immediately after thinning were compared among plots of various spacings in a young black spruce stand. As well, some thinned plots were fertilized with 200 kg/ha of nitrogen.
