He has no novel method to recommend, which, by some species of coup de main practice, would hold out to both the sur geon and the patient an instantaneous or miraculous cure, by which to excite the enthusiasm of the former and the hopes of the latter. He has only recommended a steady and a skilful perseverance in carrying out the practice of well known, long tried, and safe measures to a successful issue hence he is aware that his treatment will be unattractive to those purely surgical enthusiasts who delight more in obtaining their ends by a prompt recourse to the knife, or to manual force, than by the milder, safer, and surer measures Offered in the judicious practice of a long tried, less ostenta tious, though much more solid and conservative method of cure.
